Love story in the lab

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

May 18, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My book club picked The Love Hypothesis (2021) by Ali Hazelwood for our next book. It sounded like a fun romantic comedy, so I was eager to read it. Olive is a biology Ph.D. student at Stanford, working her ass off for very little money but high ideals. In a misguided, desperate attempt to convince her best friend that she’s not interested in Jeremy–a guy she dated a couple of times (she does this because Jeremy and her best friend are perfect for each other and she […]

The plot within the plot

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

May 10, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My boyfriend read The Plot (2021) by Jean Hanff Korelitz and recommended that I read it. Somehow I got it into my head that it was also one of President Obama’s recommended books from 2021, but I just checked and it’s not on his list. However, because of these recommendations (real and imagined), I started this book with pretty high expectations. It also helped that the Amazon blurbs had language like: “Insanely readable,” and “breathtakingly suspenseful,” which sounded promising. Jacob Finch Bonner is our protagonist and a […]

Short and satisfying

Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen

May 1, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

It’s no surprise that I picked up another romance by Sarina Bowen, especially when it involves hockey players. Must Love Hockey (2022) is a short and sweet novella that is centered around the fictional NHL team, the Brooklyn Bruisers. Although it was too short to have much of a plot besides the two love interests getting together, I enjoyed reading it. This book includes plenty of time with the hockey players, but the main character is James “Jimbo” Carozzi, and he is the equipment manager for the […]

“That was the secret of a happy marriage. Step away from the rage.”

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

April 28, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

At this point, I’ve read a lot of books by Liane Moriarty. I’ve liked some better than others, but I’ve found them all interesting. So, it wasn’t difficult to pick up Apples Never Fall (2021) when I saw it was at the library. Although Apples Never Fall wasn’t as compulsively readable as some of her books, there were some good characters with some dysfunctional family dynamics. Stan and Joy Delaney just sold their tennis school, and are figuring out retirement in their empty nest. Their four children: Amy, Logan, […]

Transforming a taboo into a cause

Period. End of Sentence. by Anita Diamant

April 27, 2022 by Sophia 2 Comments

I’d heard of the Netflix film, Period. End of Sentence., after it won an Oscar in 2019. I haven’t seen the film yet, but when I saw the book, Period. End of Sentence.: A New Chapter in the Fight for Menstrual Justice (2021), I thought it might be interesting and informative. I also listened to this one on audiobook because I barely have time for anything else. This was a short, informative book about how the shame of menstruation and the lack of access to menstrual products (period […]

“Only monsters call when they could text.”

Broken (in the best possible way) by Jenny Lawson

April 24, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

These days it seems the only books I have time for are audiobooks. In a desperate search for another audiobook at the library, I found Broken (in the best possible way) (2021) by Jenny Lawson. This is my first experience with Lawson, although she is a New York Times bestselling author and famous blogger. I found some parts of this book witty, some parts moving, and some parts a little trying. On the whole I definitely liked it, but it’s not one of my favorites. The most […]
