Top Secret Twenty One by Janet Evanovitch

December 31, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

The Janet Evanovitch series started off really strong (One for the Money), and the first five-ish entries were also solid. That was over 20 years ago now, and for a while the entries were increasingly outlandish and ridiculous. I probably wouldn’t have bought another entry, but this arrived free of charge (a friend clearing out their book hoard) and it was right on time for my New York trip pre-reading (technically the series is set in New Jersey, but this one dips across into New […]

Useful if dry work reading

Governing Canada by Michael Wernick

December 31, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I am currently working a government job (albeit not a federal government job), and this was presented to me as required reading. While I can definitively say that I would prefer to assign my own leisure hour reading, this was better than expected. Wernick was a former high level federal government worker; he was never elected but sat close to the highest elected officials in the land, from both of Canada’s main political parties (the Liberals are Justin Trudeau’s party and akin to the democrats; […]

Finishing 2022 with a Great Read

A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

December 31, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Whew, what a book- in a good way. I had started and abandoned this book multiple times, never getting past the first chapter. That first chapter featured a character named Sasha, who had problematic kleptomaniac tendencies and I found her so unlikeable that I couldn’t get past chapter one. Reader, I wasn’t wrong BUT things got So.Much.Better. As I was reading this I kept thinking about how I would describe it, as its not a straightforward narrative, either chronologically or in terms of whose story […]

The Name’s Hall, Virginia Hall

A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell

December 13, 2022 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

Virginia Hall was a real life James Bond, but better- she managed to fly under the radar of the enemy despite some distinctive physical features- red hair, artificial leg, tall for a woman- and she was never captured. Born to a wealthy family outside of Baltimore, she was a tomboy as a child and had a real thirst for adventure. After she graduated from college in the 1930’s, she took a job with the State Department in Europe, gaining language skills and diplomacy experience. When […]

“Is this book written in an alternative version of English? I have no idea what is happening”

The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon

December 13, 2022 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

Proving I learned very little from the Intellectual Property law textbook in my previous review, I stole the title of this review from one of the top questions about this book in GoodReads. To your question I saw: I am with you, sir. The other title I considered was “Am I a bad literature major?” Maybe I’ll leave that as a theoretical question, I feel like Pynchon would appreciate that. This is a slender little volume that I think is commenting on conspiracy theories and […]

Time is a flat circle and here I am reading law textbooks again.

Intellectual Property Law by David Vaver

December 13, 2022 by Wanderlustful 1 Comment

You could probably guess that this was a work book although, fun fact: it was a self-imposed read rather than a voluntold read (more of the latter coming up in about 3 reviews). I have no recollection of taking this class in school, but somehow I have a copy that looks suspiciously like I both read AND highlighted portions of it. Ah, the magic of youth, lawschool and a ton of other practical law experience that pushed this right out of my brain (sometimes I […]
