Finishing 2022 with a Great Read

A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

December 31, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Whew, what a book- in a good way. I had started and abandoned this book multiple times, never getting past the first chapter. That first chapter featured a character named Sasha, who had problematic kleptomaniac tendencies and I found her so unlikeable that I couldn’t get past chapter one. Reader, I wasn’t wrong BUT things got So.Much.Better. As I was reading this I kept thinking about how I would describe it, as its not a straightforward narrative, either chronologically or in terms of whose story […]

In case I don’t get around to finishing all the reviews I was hoping to before the deadline…I wanted to make sure to share my thoughts on my four favorite books of the year: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow; This Time Tomorrow; The Candy House; and Sea of Tranquility. 2022 was an amazing year for books. I preordered Sea of Tranquility and received in on release day. I finished it on release day too. I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t love it quite […]

“Never trust a candy house!”

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan

December 20, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I finally read A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan in 2018, and it was one of my favorite books of the year–and probably in my top ten ever. It was such a delightful surprise. Earlier this year, I heard there was something of a sequel coming out. I was excited but also worried that it would not live up to my expectations after the first book. However, I faced my fears and picked up The Candy House (2022) because there was no way I was going […]

“Sure, everything is ending. But not yet.”

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan

CBR Bingo – Time (Bingo!) Both because this books plays a bit with timelines, and because I read The Candy House out of the order of publication (which I think was mostly fine). Having read The Candy House, I was sort of prepared for the style of this novel – a series of chapters that are interrelated, working together to tell a larger story (with a huge cast of characters). I know that some consistent complaints about these books revolve around the fact that there are […]

sweet and slick, but a bit shallow (like…candy?)

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan

This was an interesting book, perhaps a bit too clever for its own good. Having just finished another book with a very similar framing narrative (Homegoing), I can say it’s not always distracting to do the whole “each subsequent chapter is based on something/someone from the prior chapter” thing. That being said, what you need to retain from chapter to chapter is a sense of emotional resonance to string together what are otherwise rather disparate short stories-ish. This book also, perhaps obviously, made me think […]

“… without a story, it’s all just information.”

The Candy House by Jennifer Egan

June 4, 2022 by booktrovert 4 Comments

I have to start by saying I never did get around to reading A Visit From the Goon Squad, I can’t really say why – I think it came out at a time when I was not really able to prioritize reading, given little kids and jobs – there were some years when my children were quite little that I did read, but it was mostly Stephen King novels, or Shirley Jackson, or just re-reading whatever was on my bookshelf. So I missed the sibling novel, […]
