Not Quite What I Was Expecting

Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen

October 7, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I’m not quite sure what to make of this one. It seems like it’s supposed to satirize reality TV, particularly The Bachelor type shows. In this case, the show is called The Catch, and we’re down to the final 4 contestants competing for a scummy D-lister. I think my problem is that the book didn’t go far enough with the satire. The characters read as one-note instead of the exaggerated characters they could have been or perhaps were supposed to be. The exception was Renee, who was a […]

Samantha Allen brings her delightfully weird mind to romance.

Roland Rogers Isn't Dead Yet by Samantha Allen

Thanks to NetGalley, RBmedia, and Recorded Books for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. If you too are a fan of Samantha Allen’s previous lesbian Sasquatch-related work, well, I actually have no idea if you will like this or not. It’s completely different. Instead of horror, we’ve got romance, instead of reality TV satire, we’ve got an aging movie star coming out of the closet (while being a ghost). And the “sex” in this . . . you’ve just got to […]

Give this little sapphic sasquatch book a shot!

Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen

This was weird and I kind of loved it. After seeing this cover I absolutely needed to read it, and that just goes to show you that sometimes you CAN judge a book by its cover. But before I get to what I liked about the book, I do want to nitpick a little, mostly with the marketing. This book is being billed as a “horror comedy” and while it’s most definitely horror, I don’t think it’s comedy. Unless you count satire as a subgenre […]

I’m making a final push to wrap up CBR13 with my non-fiction review dump. I read more non-fiction this year than I thought I did, and I was never able to sum up my thoughts properly. I’m trying here, with just moments left!  Food | Jim Gaffigan Although I disagree with Mr. Gaffigan’s take on mustard, I still enjoyed reading Food. It’s a simple take on food — the good, the not so good, how it shapes us and our culture. It was extra light […]

Tales of a Queer Cross Country Road Trip

Real Queer America by Samantha Allen

July 13, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Review 1 for Bingo (Own Voices): Here’s the scenario for Real Queer America: A transgender reporter and a friend/scribe take a trip across the American Southwest, South, and the Midwest to document LGBTQ lives and history. Along the way, old friends are visited, new ones made, memories evaluated, and research is done. Two things surprised me about this book: first, how deeply researched it is (I will be looking up some of the historical and theoretical references cited), and second, how hopeful it is about […]
