When Misfits Go Exploring

The Marsh Fellows by Anna-Laura Sullivan

May 20, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Once upon a time a young girl liked to read. She grew up to be an adult (physically) who liked to read. And one day, due to an email she received saying, “Sign up for a chance to win these books” she did. And she won several online reader copies from IDW Comics & Entertainment and Top Shelf Productions. She was excited. Finally a lunchtime came where she could start reading. She was not sure which one to start with, but since one book had […]

Three extremely different books about space

Otherworldly by Dwain Worrell

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

May 18, 2026 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

I’m being lazy and combining these three VERY DIFFERENT BOOKS because Space! I read Otherworldly and Project Hail Mary as ebooks, and Atmosphere as an audiobook. Otherworldly first! So, one of my favorite book genres is space horror. My list of fears (to read or watch a movie / TV show about) is not very long. Deep down in the ocean scares me to bits, and so does outer space. I think they’re similar in that once you’re there, you’re at the mercy of however […]

Network Effect (Murderbot Diaries #5) by Martha Wells

May 18, 2026 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

Reviewing a re-read is always a bit of a stumper for me, and even though I’ve been systematically making my way through re-reading the Murderbot books over the past couple of years the idea of trying to have something new to say about Network Effect is a bit daunting. Even though it has been over four and a half years (ouch) since I last read this book it was still fresh in my mind’s eye, there was very little that I didn’t remember from last time. But there were things that flowed much easier for […]

Past and Future and Side stories

The Butcher's Masquerade by Matt Dinniman

May 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It took me a little while to get into Dungeon Crawl Carl 5, The Butcher’s Masquerade, but once it gets going, it’s the usual action/snark/Carl-Donut-crew etc. I think part of the challenge for me, besides just general life getting in the way for a while, was that the title event really doesn’t become a factor until 2/3 of the way through, and it’s an interesting premise. Even the Hunting Grounds aspect of the current floor doesn’t seem to matter much. Carl being forced to do […]

My Second Tove Jansson and the Newest Murderbot

Platform Decay by Martha Wells

Fair Play by Tove Jansson

May 14, 2026 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Platform Decay by Martha Wells At this point, the Murderbot books are basically comfort reads. If you’ve read enough of them, you have a general idea of what’s going to happen and how things will end up, always accompanied by a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm from Murderbot. In this one, we start off with Murderbot tagging along with Three, another “rogue” SecUnit, at the start of a rescue mission. Said rescue mission goes awry pretty quickly, because this is a Murderbot book. At this point […]

These (Slow) Burning Stars

These Burning Stars by Bethany Jacobs

May 14, 2026 by G.D. Giant 4 Comments

These Burning Stars, by Bethany Jacobs, is a revenge-driven, bloody, action-heavy space opera. It’s full of political intrigue, social commentary, and gun fights. And I thought it was excellent. It was, however, slow to start for me. In fact, I originally started it several months ago and got a little stuck in the first chapter due to all the unfamiliar terminology. The author doesn’t include a glossary, so it was a bit hard for me to keep track at first. That feeling went away after […]
