The Butcher's Masquerade by Matt Dinniman

May 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It took me a little while to get into Dungeon Crawl Carl 5, The Butcher’s Masquerade, but once it gets going, it’s the usual action/snark/Carl-Donut-crew etc. I think part of the challenge for me, besides just general life getting in the way for a while, was that the title event really doesn’t become a factor until 2/3 of the way through, and it’s an interesting premise. Even the Hunting Grounds aspect of the current floor doesn’t seem to matter much. Carl being forced to do […]

“I wasn’t just going to abandon you, Carl,” Donut said. “Who do you think I am? Miss Beatrice?”

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook by Matt Dinniman

February 22, 2026 by Malin 1 Comment

Carl, Donut and Mongo have made it to the fourth level of the dungeon. This time, there are trains. So many trains. The game appears to have constructed a labyrinthine tangle of all of the world’s underground railway systems, and there are new and strange rules to get used to. There are bounties awarded to anyone who kills any of the players in the top ten, which now include both Carl and Donut. There are all manner of strange monsters on the various trains and […]

Talking Donuts Explode

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

January 17, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Dungeon Crawl Carl is still going pretty strong in book 4. Carl, along with Donut, and a few others are on floor 5, which seemingly requires a bit of teamwork or at least coordination between groups. It really takes a while for the story to get going, maybe a little too much time doing some scene setting that just doesn’t seem that necessary. The probably haunted buried temple thing likewise has some good potential that really doesn’t get developed. The flying gnomes and the camel […]

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook by Matt Dinniman

November 30, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

In my opinion, The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook is the point at which this series really takes off and comes into its own. Prior to this, it’s still very good, but you miss the continuity from hunt to hunt and the community that builds around Carl. This book is where we first meet Katia, who is critical to that sense of community. I believe it’s also the first time we meet Prepotente, but everything before Gate of the Feral Gods blurs together to me so much that I […]

Carl’s Doomsday Scenario

Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman

November 23, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Personally, I think that the bones that make Dungeon Crawler Carl are there from the very first book: gruesome brutality combined with gut-busting humor, consistent rules and exploits of those rules to advance within the dungeon, and a very human cost that you feel to your bones. However, I also think that the series doesn’t come into its own and become the Dungeon Crawler Carl that’s surging to the top of the zeitgeist until Carl get’s the Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook. Once that happens, “I Will Break You […]

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

November 22, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Really cheating my ass off with this one, but whatever, I’m giving myself a little grace because my love for and rereading of this story is sincere. I finished Dungeon Crawler Carl and truly, immediately restarted them. I really can’t remember the last time I did this with a series. I do it with movies, TV shows, and even video games often, but restarting a book series as soon as I’ve finished it is something I haven’t done since maybe middle school with Redwall. In Dungeon […]
