Carl’s Doomsday Scenario

Carl's Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman

April 27, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Carl’s Doomsday Scenario continues the saga of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Let’s get the important stuff out of the way: if you liked the first book, you’ll like the second. There’s more of the same stuff featuring Carl and the adorable Princess Donut as they make their way through the complex world of the dungeon. The emotions continue to build, the story matures, and the characters get deeper and continue to move away from the tropes that tend to plague an Isekai-esque thing like this. In […]

Doomsday Do’s and Doomsday Don’ts

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

April 22, 2025 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Carl is a normal dude. Except that he is stuck in the apocalypse. With his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut. And there is an alien invasion. Plus, Carl and most of what’s left of humanity are involuntarily placed on a Running-Man-style intergalactic game show. And the contestants don’t know who (if anyone) to trust. And the odds are that they will all die very soon. To stave off the inevitable, the characters have to kill monsters (Are they monsters?) and level up. Is it worth it […]

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

April 19, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

I was first introduced to Dungeon Crawler Carl by my wife, squealing with delight and laughter at a dozen hilarious things in the first couple chapters. I was a little hard of a sell for her as I think that a lot of these “normal white redditor-style human gets transferred to video game irl” tend to be very fappy and poorly written. Add in that it’s self-published and that’s a recipe for disaster in my book. The first few chapters of DCC seemed to support this: Carl […]

Carl and Donut’s Guide to Dungeon Crawling as Reality TV

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

February 8, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had Dungeon Crawler Carl on my TBR for a while (picked it up as retail therapy not too long ago, but it’s been on a list for good bit longer), and then there was a spike of reviews on here, so now here’s my take. I kind of do get the hype; there’s humor but it’s kind of dark by necessity, there’s hope in the midst of tragedy and chaos, and it’s mostly pretty entertaining. The basic story feels kind of like a mish-mash […]

Carl and Donut become warlords

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman

This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman

January 12, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

In this set of novels, we really start seeing more and more of the external impact, and some of the bigger picture. There are still so many questions but the story is continuing to grow bigger as we learn more. So many more lawsuits and injunctions about decisions and actions in the game that play but they are mostly just irritating the ever more off the rails AI. Book 6: The Eye of the Bedlam Bride – floor 7&8 First a maze and then a […]

Carl and Donut’s Continued Adventures

The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman

January 12, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I am having a bit of a hard time remembering when some of the “outside of dungeon” events occurred in relation to each book so going to do this one as more general review with some details about each book. Dinniman keeps adding more details to the world building beyond the dungeon and I might like that broader picture even more than the dungeon. We get to see things like CrawlerCon (so fun) but also see hints of the larger politics and how the crawl […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
