“Spite was honor when it was the only weapon you had against someone more powerful” – BINGO!

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian

September 19, 2022 by Malin 7 Comments

4.5 stars CBR14: Rec’d (this has been recommended by multiple Cannonballers and pretty much every romance review blog I can think of) Edward Percival “Percy” Talbot, Lord Holland, returns to England after several years abroad in Europe to discover that his mother died in his absence, and his deeply unpleasant father hastily remarried, to Percy’s best friend from childhood, Lady Marian Hayes, who also had time to birth Percy a baby sister. Furthermore, Marian reveals that a blackmailer has contacted her with proof that the […]

The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power by Deirdre Mask

September 8, 2022 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

The Address Book is one of many published in early 2020 which likely suffered from a distracted world. Early 2020 was a rough time to publish and attempt to publicize a book. But thanks to lists of books you missed I’m glad this one came to my attention. Separately, recognizing Hollywood, Florida the city next to my hometown listed alongside much larger cities seemed a perfectly good reason to add this book to my reading list. If you think about street addresses, it is likely […]

The English Patient

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

August 3, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

CBR14Bingo – Rec’d – This book is “recommended” in the sense that when I was in high school, a crush of mine told me I should read it, and it was presented in an obviously challenging way, but I didn’t get it. I also didn’t get that it was flirtatious, and honestly a little revealing about their intentions. The book has the real disservice of people deciding that the movie is long and boring. I actually like the movie a lot, but the weird thing […]

Magically Heartwarming

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

July 26, 2022 by Ale Leave a Comment

Crystalclear recommended The Magic Fish to me for it’s fairytales and the beautiful illustrations. And she couldn’t have been more right. Trung Le Nguyen weaves a heartwarming story of Tien and his mother, two Vietnamese immigrants living in the US who are trying to navigate language, culture, and coming of age while battling loneliness and family duty. Tien’s mother asks him to read her fairytales to help her with her English, and as they unfold, they remind her of how the fairytales are different in Vietetamese […]

Vitality and Mortality

The Everlasting: A Novel by Katy Simpson Smith

July 15, 2022 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Cbr14bingo Rec’d The description of this novel was irresistible for me — historical fiction that spans four very different time periods, linked by their location (Rome) and an object in common. It reminded me of Geraldine Brooks’ People of the Book, which I read and loved a long time ago. This novel is extraordinarily clever and well written but for some reason, most likely related to my own mental state these days, I had a hard time getting into it and I’m pretty sure I […]

New York City in the 70s man. You just had to be there

Just Kids by Patti Smith

October 31, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Last year I read Rachel Kushner’s The Flamethrowers, which takes place in the arts scene in New York in the early ‘70s. Just Kids feels like the novel that Kushner was trying to write, or at least the world she was trying to fit her characters into. The contrast between these two works was really highlighted by how vibrant and desire-filled Smith’s book is- the things that bothered me about The Flamethrowers were the limp, motive-less main character and the pretension of the art world […]
