“You’ll never understand the way the worlds really work until you surround yourself with people from all sorts of weird backgrounds.”

Saga: Volume Four by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

Saga: Volume Five by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

Saga: Volume Six by Brian K. Vaughan (writer), Fiona Staples (artist)

The Saga re-read continues. I’m still in love with this series. It’s rare to have humor, sorrow, wit, action, adventure, and beautiful drawings married in one text, but this is that text. Volume Four would be my sole four star rated volume, but I am refusing to grade these against themselves, they are collectively some of the best storytelling I have read and will all be given five stars, regardless of swings in execution from volume to volume. That said, while I’m sure that the plot […]

I’m working on a re-read of the Saga before I indulge myself in the latest, Volume 10, now that Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are back from their sabbatical. It’s been four years since I last cracked these books, but I was immediately pulled back into the world that Vaughan’s writing and Staples’ beautiful art bring so vividly to life. Its easy to remember why this series possesses so many awards (seriously, its got Harvey Awards, a Hugo Award, British Fantasy Award, Goodreads Choice […]

Re-re-reads count, don’t they?

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

October 12, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Re-re-read in honor of Husband Material: Re-re-reading this book, especially after reading Husband Material, made me realize that it’s a five star book by me. While “Priya” the Muslim will never cease to exasperate me (to recap: Priya is a Hindu name, or more relevantly it’s not a kosher Muslim name because it is religious. While it does mean “beloved” it’s also a name used for a minor goddess, and as such would not be given to a practicing Muslim child. Google, my friend!) so much of […]

“In any event,” Percy went on, “what I had thought were principles were merely manners, and they’re utterly insufficient for my present circumstances.”

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian

July 21, 2022 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb is a book unabashedly about the heart. There are so many famous quotes about the heart that remind me forcefully of this book. Perhaps the easiest is the heart wants what it wants. So much of the plot of The Queer Principles of Kit Webb is caught up in its leads doing what their hearts tell them is right, what they know to be true from somewhere deep within. We get our two heroes, the titular Kit Webb, a […]

one last re-read of a book from 2021, which is a great sign

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell

December 31, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Strong content warnings, from the author: https://everinamaxwell.com/content-wa… Thanks again to the dual recommendations from llamareadsbooks and CoffeeShopReader both! Re-read (October 2021, review December 2021): I wanted to also re-read this book after The Charm Offensive and my re-read of Boyfriend Material, so I suppose the best theme you could stitch would be “gay HEAs, location notwithstanding.” I agree with the original reviews that this isn’t really a romance first scifi novel, but perhaps it’s more of a mood that you have to go into it with. On this second re-read, I found it very romantic, […]
