“Because her general taste appalled him, it annoyed him that he himself constituted one of her favorites.”

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick

July 17, 2026 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Jason Taverner, like me, is in his early forties. However, unlike me, he is an international superstar. Somewhere between a Kardashian, Jimmy Fallon, and Kelly Clarkson, Taverner is lab created to be a charismatic talk show hosting crooner. He is a “Six” – a special kind of genetically modified cool guy. There’s a schmooze-ness to him, sure, but he is undoubtedly magnetic. That’s why the whole world knows who he is, and why they buy his records. Until they don’t.  One day Taverner is minding […]

Digger, Volume One by Ursula Vernon

July 17, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If Lord of the Rings, Redwall and Haru by Joe Latham had a book baby (though I’m assuming Haru could have been influenced by this story) Digger, Volume One by Ursula Vernon would be the result. It is funny, dense, dark, mysterious, slow in parts, yet it keeps you hooked wondering what is next. It is not for young or sensitive readers, as the images are mostly “tame,” the text and descriptions are not always so. The black and white art is both positive and […]

Bunny in the Middle by Linda Olafsdottir

July 17, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Bunny in the Middle by Linda Olafsdottir is my cbr18bingo Bingo Middle square. First, there is Middle in the title. Second, the bunny in question is introduced when they show up in the middle of the floor/room. Third, we find ourselves in the middle of an adventure; well multiple ones as our main character finds herself exploring different books. Finally, it is due in the middle of February 2027  Therefore, take your pick which Bingo Middle works for you. And now that you are almost in […]

The Rainbow Sheep by David Hayward

July 17, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are no real surprises on the pages of The Rainbow Sheep by David Hayward (recently published in May 2026, read via an online reader copy). But that does not matter. It is just a nice book with fun illustrations that tells you “Be the Rainbow Sheep.” Or the purple sheep, or the blue and pink sheep, or the black sheep, or the white sheep. If you have been online the last few years, you have probably seen Jesus holding one of the rainbow sheep. […]

Just One Gift: A Thoughtful Classroom Story told through Poetry for Kids (Ages 8-12) by Linda Sue Park and Robert Sae-Heng

July 17, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Just One Gift: A Thoughtful Classroom Story told through Poetry for Kids (Ages 8-12) by Linda Sue Park and Robert Sae-Heng has a unique format to teach the children of the story, and the reader, acts of kindness and selflessness. Inspired by a form of Korean poetry, Park takes a middle school classroom and its students and gives them a task (well, their teacher does). They must pick a slip of paper from a hat. It will have Family, Friend, or ? (question mark) on […]

Dragon Haven: Volume Two of The Rain Wilds Chronicles by Robin Hobb

July 16, 2026 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr18bingo Wheels This is the second book in a four-book series. I reviewed Volume 1 Dragon Keeper here. In Dragon Haven, a group of Rain Wilds youth, outcasts due to their physical “deformities”, are now functioning as Dragon Keepers (or shepherds, if you need something for the sheep square). Their job is to guide the dragons, who emerged deformed from their cocoons, up river, away from people and civilization, on a quest to find the fabled lost city of Kelsingra. In an ancient past, when […]
