The Do-Over by Lynn Painter

May 20, 2026 by Halbs 3 Comments

My second read of the year comes from the long-standing tradition between my spouse and me: At the end of each year, we jot down five books for the other person to read over the upcoming year. I confess that The Do-Over was from the 2024 list, but in the spirit of the book, I thought I should go ahead and get ‘er read (a do-over!). I enjoyed the book and found it to be good medicine for our toxic times. Emily Hornby is the kind […]

Panda Bears Eat 35 Pounds of Bamboo Daily

The Beast in the Clouds: The Roosevelt Brothers' Deadly Quest to Find the Mythical Giant Panda by Nathalia Holt

March 16, 2026 by Halbs 2 Comments

This book was recently chosen for my book club of dudes, perpetuating the stereotype that guys don’t read fiction. Y’all know I *do* read fiction, though, because (a) I like it, and (b) I like to be a contrarian. Anyway, Dr. Nathalia Holt’s newest historical narrative is about the Roosevelt brothers’ 1929 expedition to the Himalayas to try and locate the fabled panda bear. Ted and Kermit were sons of former President Teddy Roosevelt, and frenemy cousins with FDR. Neither son could do much to […]

Dissonance and Resolution

The Fetishist by Katherine Min

February 19, 2026 by Halbs Leave a Comment

What a gorgeous book. This is one of those lit fic novels where multiple intersecting characters crash into one another through some unexpected event, and find that they have more in common than they expected. Kyoko is a young singer and illustrator, full of art and rage. In particular, she loves making music with her boyfriend Kornell, and she hates a moderately successful classical musician named Daniel. Man years ago, Daniel was the lover of Kyoko’s mom. Kyoko’s mom is dead, and Kyoko blames Daniel. […]

Lincoln’s Melancholy

Lincoln Viewed through the Power of Melancholy

Lincoln's Melancholy: How Depression Challenged a President and Fueled his Greatness by Joshua Wolf Shenk

February 18, 2026 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This new to me biography of Lincoln focuses on his depressive temperament, how he and his contemporaries viewed that temperament, and what modern-day readers can learn from Lincoln’s life and outlook. Shenk lays the groundwork for this book by observing that the labeling of psychological phenomena can be helpful, but also artificially limiting. “Language doesn’t just name a reality; it creates a reality.” Going to talk about how Lincoln has been viewed throughout history, including as bipolar and depressed, Shenk states that “such retrospective diagnoses […]

“Nightmares do come true, but never in the shape you expect.”

Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams

January 7, 2026 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Shoutout to BookPage, the free monthly magazine found at all my local libraries, for recommending Taylor Adams’ Hairpin Bridge. This isn’t a book I would have picked up on my own, so it was exciting to expand my horizons with new-to-me author and a darker read than I’m used to. Overall this was a well-written, taut thriller with something meaningful to say about grief. The story begins like all good stories – in a diner. Lena Nguyen, a loner in her twenties, is seeking closure […]

Blue Notes

Cahokia Jazz by Franics Spufford

December 28, 2025 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Reading this book was a unique experience for me. Since it focuses on First Nations in America, some parts are tough and sad. I borrowed it from the library and wasn’t sure I’d finish before it was due, especially because of the heavy moments. But I felt I owed it to the main character to see it through. That’s never happened to me before. I’m glad I finished Cahokia Jazz. The story has really stayed with me, even though I’ve returned the book. The story […]
