Orit Bergmana writes a book

Simon Says Good Night by Orit Bergman

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I first saw the cover of Simon Says Good Night my first thought was that it was an awkward cover. My gut reaction was that it is a “cuter” version of a “Sambo” character (instead of the stereotypical dark character with exaggerated features, the skin was a light chocolate milk, with rosy cheeks giving it an Italian clown look). That alone actually made me want to read it, as I know I really should not judge a book by its cover. When I saw […]

A book and review about nothing

The Museum of Nothing by Steven Guarnaccia

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read several picture books of late as they are fun and easy to read. I like to say I have accomplished something. You might think it is nothing, but trust me, it is something. Yet, when you read about about Nothing, have you read something? You have if it was the book The Museum of Nothing. Steven Guarnaccia shows us that there is a lot of something in nothing. Not only are there words (some of which are explained in the afterwards at […]

Only in New York (50 States) by Heather Alexander

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

From Manhattan to Hudson Bay (and every place before, between and after), from hockey to baseball history, from plants and flowers, from being the first national capital, to hosting the oldest inn in the continental US, from parks and museums and attractions, from animals and castles, Only in New York covers it all in this kids encyclopedic like book. Heather Alexander shows us that we can craft our own kazoo in the Kazoo Museum in Eden, New York. We find out the state fossil, the […]

An egret flew onto a rhino

We Are Going to be Pals! by Mark Teague

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mark Teague usually is a hit for me as an author. And as an illustrator almost always is a hit. They have a style that is fun.  But this time I am not sure about the text of We Are Going to be Pals! The artwork is cute, the egret and rhinoceros are a repeated on every page, but the things around them sometimes change (though they are always in the habitat you would find them in) and that is fun to see. And though […]

I read a lot of Benson Shum

Imagine You and Me by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Can you remember your first best friend? Even if they were, shall we say, not visible to others? Honestly, I cannot remember that friend (or if I had one), but I do remember my special stuffed koala bear friend and the adventures we had. And Parker has many adventures with her own bear friend, Randall. However, there comes a day when one of them makes new friends, but those new friends cannot see the not so real one. No spoilers, (yet you probably can guess […]

Little Seed, Big Heart

Little Seed by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As of the writing of this review for Little Seed by Benson Shum, I have read six of their books, with the except of Holly’s Day at the Pool, and Alex’s Good Fortune written and illustrated by Shum; Go to Sheep and Hide ‘n’ Sheep by Jennifer Sattler (illustrated by Shum) or Sloth Went by Adam Lehrhaupt (illustrated by Shum). And while looking at what I needed to/had read I realized they are the author/illustrator of First Night of Howlergarten, which I really liked but […]
