Getting your vroom on

Sarabeth's Garage by Melanie Florence and Nadia Alam

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Once again, I found a book that I almost did not read. I was going through online reader copy links and Sarabeth’s Garage by Melanie Florence popped up. It had a funny looking cover, realistic, but overly cartoon based. It was colorful and okay, but not “grabbing me.” Still I was looking at Sarabeth, on the cover, with a garage behind her. It wasn’t bad-looking, okay it definitely looked like this was going to be a “girl power, girls can do anything story” but was […]

Cinderella: (Original Brothers Grimm Version) by Brothers Grimm, Bernadette Watts (Illustrator) Do you know the story of Cinderella? You probably think you do, but you also probably only know one version of this classic tale. Be it the Disney version or the more famous Charles Perrault version, you have only seen a small bit of the history of this folktale. Now, I had heard about the original version the Grimm Brothers had done, but I mostly forgot about it. If the version you know is […]

The Friendship Train: A True Story of Helping and Healing by Debbie Levy and Boris Kulikov

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you think of World War II you don’t usually think of a sweet story about friendship, hope and caring, but that is what The Friendship Train: A True Story of Helping and Healing after World War II is about.  Author Debbie Levy tells of how after the devastating world war, Europe faced a brutal winter. Low on supplies, food, and practically everything needed for survival, it was figured most would not make it. But in an attempt to help, (from publisher description) spearheaded by […]

Did You Kiss A Cat Today???: Poems for Children by Diane Stevenson, Geri Lipschultz and James Berger

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The first couple of poems of Did You Kiss A Cat Today???: Poems for Children by Diane Stevenson, Geri Lipschultz and James Berger were odd. I felt they were more adult and darker than I think would be appropriate for children. Then, more poems came and more of those were for children. But once again, darker and more adult poems came about. There was realism, nonsense, and other stuff. And I say stuff as sometimes I understood the theme of things, sometimes I did not. […]

April 15, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Can I Touch Your Hair? Poems of Race, Mistakes, and Friendship  by Irene Latham (author), Charles Waters (author), Sean Qualls (illustrator), Selina Alko (illustrator)   I had forgotten I read the poetry collection, Can I Touch Your Hair? years ago, therefore, it felt like reading it for the first time with this recent reading.
