A group of women who fuck up men who fuck up women

The Black Coats by Colleen Oakes

May 26, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 5 Comments

This was such a great read! It combined two things I love: feminism and secret societies. Secret society stories are serious cat nip for me. Any tv show that does a secret society episode is my jam and I WILL watch that episode on repeat. Veronica Mars gifted me with multiple secret society episodes, for which I am forever grateful. Anyway, this book’s themes are super relevant to today’s real life me too movement and concerns. The Black Coats are a group of women who […]

The Dinosaur Artist: Obsession, Betrayal, and the Quest for Earth's Ultimate Trophy by Paige Williams

May 21, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

This was the second nonfiction book in a row where true crime and Leonardo DiCaprio both played a role. Not saying Leo’s up to some shady shit (don’t sue me Leo!), but it is a little weird right? He might be living his life on the criminal fringes of society to come into contact with so much shadiness. Or maybe all rich people are like that? Maybe just certain rich people are like that. I seriously doubt the Gates are trying to procure illegal dinosaurs […]

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

2.5 stars. Oooh, I really wanted to like this one so much more than I did. I, like many other Cannonball readers, LOVED The Hating Game a few years ago and had high expectations for 99 Percent Mine. I don’t really regret reading it because it’s at least an interesting flop, it just never gelled for me. Darcy Barrett is a pretty great character. She’s traveled the world gathering oodles of life experience and moonlights as a biker bar bartender to earn extra money aside […]

Teenage Sherlock Holmes

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

Ahhh, Maureen Johnson books, always with the cliffhangers. I should know by now, but couldn’t resist picking up these two books in her unfinished Truly Devious series. At least the second book is out and I found that cliffhanger to be much less nefarious than the first book’s cliffhanger. Ellingham Academy seems like a pretty dope place despite its dark history. It’s a private school in Vermont for bright young students of all kinds. Essentially you just have to reach out if you want to […]

Horrifying and sadly not surprising

Billion Dollar Whale by Tom Write & Bradley Hope

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

It boggles my mind that people can get away with swindling banks and governments and other institutions to essentially steal millions of dollars. It boggles my mind that our president seems to be one of those people. But this book focuses in on Malaysia and a low life high profile scammer named Jho Low. This book is basically the dark mirror flip version of Crazy Rich Asians. Instead of feeling awed and entertained, prepare to feel queasy and disgusted if you pick this book up. […]

The Matchmaker's List by Sonya Lalli

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

I’m the kind of reader who DNFs quickly and fairly frequently. I can usually tell by 50 pages in if I’m feeling it or not and don’t waste my time on things I’m going to regret reading. That I got 70% into this book and then rage quit is pretty unusual for me. I think I just wanted to love it so much that I couldn’t process how much I wasn’t enjoying the book until I couldn’t deny it any longer. The basic premise is […]
