Nadiya’s Kitchen: Over 100 Simple, Delicious Family Recipes by Nadiya Hussain

Easy Gourmet: Awesome Recipes Anyone Can Cook by Stephanie Le

December 17, 2021 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I’m grouping these two together because they both fulfill the Reading Women Challenge task 4: Cookbook by a woman of color. I own one and borrowed the other, I’ve cooked from both (although no pictures this time – sorry!) and I feel each is a three star book for me, for similar reasons. Without further ado… Nadiya’s Kitchen After having fallen in love with Nadiya and her outstanding bakes on the Great British Bake Off (Great British Baking Show in the U.S.) and placing her […]

When something feels ethically wrong language is a good place to look for clues to why.

Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

December 15, 2021 by faintingviolet 6 Comments

Amanda Montell is a language scholar who takes her readers on a trip through social history using linguistics. I read and enjoyed Montell’s Wordslut two years ago, and in her second book, Cultish, Montell is interested in examining the edges of our culture that can exhibit some unhealthy habits by examining the way language is used in them, and that is the kind of thing I am going to sign up for every time.   Utilizing both storytelling and independent research Montell exposes the linguistic elements that make a wide spectrum of […]

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

December 1, 2021 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

We have a Murderbot murder mystery novella. It is almost as if this book was written specifically for me. Although published after Network Effect, Fugitive Telemetry takes place before it, after Mensah brings Murderbot to Preservation Station. We join action in progress as a body has been discovered on the Station and Murderbot accompanies Dr. Mensah and Senior Officer Indah as an investigation is undertaken. Dr. Mensah does her Dr. Mensah thing and Murderbot is contracted to aid in the investigation (neither Murderbot not Senior […]

Pandemics Call for Comfort Food, Obviously

Modern Comfort Food: a Barefoot Contessa Cookbook by Ina Garten

November 27, 2021 by faintingviolet 6 Comments

One of the things I think about when I’m rating and reviewing cookbooks is: are they a good read? I am of course going to worry about the quality of the recipes, but if the writing is not good there is really no reason to pick up the book – these days the internet will generally be able to provide you with a variety of options for whatever it is you’re on the hunt for, but a well written cookbook will help you understand the […]

“The Resistance was the kiss of death, to friends and allies alike.”

Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse

November 26, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

The reading experience of Resistance Reborn is a story of two halves for me. I enjoyed Rebecca Roanhorse’s writing, I find the way she uses a sparring amount of words to build a mood, and from a mood a setting to be incredibly effective, which I’ve enjoyed from her before. On the other hand, though, I wasn’t floored by the actual story covered within the pages of this book. Broadly, in this novel, Poe Dameron, General Leia Organa, Rey, and Finn struggle to rebuild the […]

“Boomerang arrow, Kate — It comes back to you in the end. Boomerang. Respect it.”

Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction, David Aja (artist), Annie Wu (illustrator), Chris Eliopolous (letterer)

Hawkeye, Volume 2: Little Hits by Matt Fraction, David Aja (Artist), Francesco Francavilla (Art & Color), Steve Lieber (Artist), Jesse Hamm (Artist), Matt Hollingsworth (Color Artist), Chris Eliopoulos (Letterer)

November 26, 2021 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Before diving into Disney+’s Hawkeye show I decided to pick up the Matt Fraction run from 2012-2016. One of my friends read them as they were releasing and she raved, suggesting them to me then as an entry into the larger comics world, but I took her up on Northanger Abbey instead. In the years since I’ve dipped my toe in, reading Chelsea Cain’s Mockingbird run, a Star War, and deep diving into Saga in all its gorgeous, heartbreaking glory (and I’m eyeing a 2022 […]
