My eyes hurt from rolling them so hard

Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing by Emily Lynn Paulson

May 10, 2024 by carmelpie 4 Comments

I have mixed feelings about how to review this book. I wish I had read it without knowing anything about the author or about her story. If I hadn’t known anything, I might have been willing to suspend my disbelief and follow along without any expectations. However, I was already quite prejudiced about the author beforehand. The author spent seven years as a top sales sales leader at Rejuvinat. Rejuvinat isn’t real, but it is the fake name for a well-known cosmetics and wellness brand. […]

White Privilege Pyramid Scheme

Hey Hun by Emily Lynn Paulson

February 29, 2024 by Debcapsfan 4 Comments

Hey Hun is the story of Emily Lynn Paulson’s time in an MLM. She is the narrator of her own audiobook. Emily changes the name of the MLM to protect herself from being sued, but she doesn’t really level anything particularly shocking against the company. The company uses the standard techniques of an MLM in that the people who start the MLM make money by recruiting more people into the company, and the people at the bottom of the pyramid who joined the company last […]

One sweet, slow burn romance and one mafia story with too many plot lines

Punk-In: MM Rockstar Romance (Wayward Lane Book 1) by Ava Olsen

Punk-In: MM Rockstar Romance (Wayward Lane Book 1) By Ava Olson 3 stars Brodie is the lead singer of the rock band, “Wayward Lane.” He is out and, per his own admission, is a “fuckboy.” His manager Van is straight, and they work and tour together for four years as Brodie’s band becomes more and more popular. The tension in this book is excellent. It switches between Brodie’s and Van’s POVs. Brodie has a huge crush on Van, but worries that Van will think Brodie […]

cover of Sink or Swim by Annabeth Albert

Does this count as Sweater…Sweater?

Sink or Swim by Annabeth Albert

January 3, 2024 by jessisreading 3 Comments

I love a good Sweater/Disaster romance. You know, the kind where someone is incredibly buttoned up and their love interest is messy (in all the ways), and can’t even keep their head on their shoulders? So it was a surprise when I picked up Sink or Swim and discovered that this might be a book with a Sweater Guy…and another Sweater Guy. Except one sweater is argyle and the other is plaid, I guess. Felix is a well-dressed, well kept, slightly uptight doctor who is a single parent […]

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

March 25, 2022 by krisbholland 1 Comment

Looking for something frothy and fun for Spring Break? Casey McQuiston’s debut novel Red, White and Royal Blue is the perfect light read for those of us who love celebrity gossip and US Weekly magazine. Alex Diaz-Claremont is a college senior at Georgetown University. His best friends are his sister, June, and his ex-girlfriend, Nora. Oh, and he happens to be the son of the President of the United States, Ellen Claremont. After an embarrassing incident at the royal wedding of Prince Phillip involving Phillip’s younger […]

“Are you in a cult?”

Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

January 10, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos 12 Comments

Well, I might be! Really, I’m inundated with cultish language- much like most of you are as well! The above question, posited by our own CBR gurus and shared across social media, was attached to an excellent review by faintingviolet. Her review kindled a blaze with other CBR readers- myself included! Our Goodreads walls are packed with update-after-update barrages of people frantically ripping through this read! I am very much looking forward to the Cultish flood headed our way. Now- back to the question. Am I […]
