Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review.
I was sitting here thinking about how I should rate this, and I just really, really enjoyed myself, so I’m rounding this 4.5 star book up to five. Perhaps it is because there are two cats in here and one of them is a black one, and perhaps it is because of the ending, but regardless, I’m doing it, and I have no regrets.
I liked the first book of Icelandic horror author Hildur Knútsdóttir’s that was translated into English (by Mary Robinette Kowal). It was genuinely creepy and freakish, and very unsettling in the end. But this one is more my speed. (It’s nice to know they have range.) If you liked that one but couldn’t deal with the , give this one a go. The only person dying in here deserves it.
And relax, that’s not a spoiler. You know on the first page that our main character, Unnur, is disposing of a dead human body. The rest of the novella is catching you up to how that body got dead in the first place, and how it ends up for Unnur. I’ve seen some reviews that say this is more of a thriller, but eh, it does get very gory, and the subject matter (see content warnings) is mentally harrowing.
Definitely recommend this one!
