Finding family

On the Move: Home Is Where You Find It by Michael Rosen

May 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A rating of 3 makes this seem like it On the Move: Home Is Where You Find It is not a good book/collection. However, this rating is because of the images of Quentin Blake, which I am not a fan of. However, they are perfect for the atmosphere of the writing (raw, desolate, almost hopeless) and since t there are no half points, this is a 3.5 lower 4. The idea of migration, refugees, immigrants, all come together while we follow Michael Rosen finding out about […]

An adventure for some, but I’m not one

Super Space Weekend: Adventures in Astronomy (Science Adventure Club) by Gaelle Almeras

May 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure if Super Space Weekend: Adventures in Astronomy (Science Adventure Club) is a second (or at least not the first in a series) of titles, but there was some missing information for me. The book starts off with three friends who seem to have been introduced to us before. But I know I have not previously met Squeak, Orni, and Castor. Despite this “in the middle” feeling, I was getting a good feeling about Gaelle Almeras’ graphic novel. I was excited to learn […]

Sunshine: A Graphic Novel by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

April 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sunshine: A Graphic Novel (with the subtitle of How one camp taught me about life, death, and hope) is not only the follow up to Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s Hey, Kiddo: A Graphic Novel, it is a must read! But have tissues ready for the laughs and especially the tears. This time we follow young JJK (Jarrett J. Krosoczka) as he volunteers with five other classmates and two adult chaperones at a camp for children with terminal illness and their family. The main theme of what […]

Diseases shape the course of history

Plague-Busters!: Medicine's Battles with History's Deadliest Diseases by  Lindsey Fitzharris

April 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Plague-Busters!: Medicine’s Battles with History’s Deadliest Diseases by Lindsey Fitzharris and Adrian Teal is probably my new favorite nonfiction read of 2023 (I know it is still only late April, but something tells me I won’t be reading too many more nonfictions and if I do, nothing will match up to this).  Due in October 2023, I give this book a 4.5 as I need to see the final artwork. What I had in my reader copy, was mostly black and white, but there were a […]

The eyes of Tituba

Who Was Accused in the Salem Witch Trials?: Tituba: A Who HQ Graphic Novel by Insha Fitzpatrick

February 2, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who Was Accused in the Salem Witch Trials?: Tituba: A Who HQ Graphic Novel highlights one woman’s story during the Salem Witch Trials. We focus on Tituba, the slave woman who was accused of bewitching the children she oversaw. It does not go deeply into the situation (the trial, her time before the accusation, the jail, etc.) but focuses on Tituba’s role in the events, and some of the more important details, on a point-by-point basis. There are historical information side boxes that will give […]

The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees by Don Brown

September 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am starting this review of The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees by Don Brown with this statement: Brown has an agenda with this book, but that is not a bad thing.  It is a complicate book with a complicated theme, yet also, straight forward.  I will add, I have rewritten this review too many times. I was well over 600 words at one point. This book was upsetting, enlightening and a not an all together unpleasant journey, but not one for just anyone. […]
