I know someone who could have been here, do you?

The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

SPOILER included: The Degenerates is a slow story, that ends on a not happy note! I wanted my happy ending! I know it was not realistic to have one, but these characters all deserve one. With that said, this look set in 1928 and the way “others” are treated is interesting but does lack a little “something.” (Which is partially why I was wanting these characters to have a happy ending.) The afterwards was also interesting, putting things into context. While for at least 12-13 […]

Sister Magic

Beatrice Likes the Dark by Genevieve Tucholke

June 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Beatrice Likes the Dark while her sister Roo loves the light. Neither can understand the other’s love of spiders, cellars, stars (Beatrice), or the sun, flowers, and the days joys (Roo). But when Roo admits to being afraid of the dark, Beatrice does what any good big sister would do, and gives her a special piece of magic. Learning to appreciate and love each other (even if they cannot get behind the other’s personal tastes), the sisters create a happy medium. April Genevieve Tucholke’s text […]

Lulu & Zoey: A Sister Story by Carrie Finison

June 22, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was not sure what to expect of Lulu & Zoey: A Sister Story. But it was not what occurred in this Carrie Finison picture book. We have an outside narrator telling us that sometimes sisters do “this” or “that” with examples given by sisters Lulu and Zoey. Sometimes Lulu wants to play, Zoey does not. Sometimes Zoey has a really cool pen and even though she will share, Lulu steals the rest of the art supplies. Sometimes Lulu decorates Zoey’s diary, and Zoey is […]

June 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spectacular Sisters: Amazing Stories of Sisters from Around the World by Aura Lewis includes some sisters you know, others you might have heard of, some you have probably never heard of and others are so well known even my dad has heard of them! The woman featured in the couple pages biographies, cover all walks of life from political leaders (ancient and modern), warriors, pop culture, artists, and writers. We see the gambit of siblings who call each other sister. Some were terribly close, others had […]

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother

Bad Sister by Charise Mericle Harper

March 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

An interesting story of siblings and how a younger brother showed his older sister a few things. And that is what you are supposed to get from Bad Sister by Charise Mericle Harper. What I got was another poor, put-upon big sister, getting the blame for having an annoying, bratty, spoiled younger sibling (can you guess which one I am with me and my sister?) Seriously though, both Harper and the world see Charise (the character) as “in the wrong” (and she even goes as […]

March 4, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you see the title of the novel, The Meet-Cute Project by Rhiannon Richardson, that says it all. This novel is a young adult Meet-Cute romance without any surprises story.
