This book was scrumptious, and I devoured it. I stayed up so late reading it I legit almost fell asleep at work the next day. So there’s this dragon who lives near an evil wood, and once every ten years, he chooses a girl from a local village to take into his castle. In return for protecting the people from the corruption of the Wood, they allow him to choose freely from their daughters. But this dragon doesn’t have claws or wings; he has magic. He’s […]
Jane Austen meets light fantasy, with some significant flaws.
On the one hand, yes, this was fun because Jane Austen + magic = yes. If you go into the book expecting Jane Austen levels of wit and social satire, you are going to be disappointed. But I didn’t. I went in expecting a fantasy novel set in an Austen-like world with an Austen-like romance plot, and so I was fine. And the magic system was really interesting to me. So basically, this is Regency England if magic were real, and largely considered another art, […]
A vampire named Gampire.
Okay, so. Look. This book. So good. I mean, it just. It has no right to. Like. What. To be so good. Finding words? Like, it should NOT work. Brain trying to brain. Failing. Fuck it. I’m not capable of being objective about this book. FIVE STARS. But first before the actual review, two things, so I can feel I’ve said my piece: 1. This book is NOT Harry Potter fanfiction, and Simon and Baz are NOT Harry and Draco. They are just not. You will not […]
Wrong on so, so many levels
I just read a terrible romance where the heroine is a senior at Penn, the hero is a 40-ish doctor who stops in at the coffee shop where she works once a week. He turns out to be an ob/gyn who volunteers at the university’s clinic once a week. Want to guess who her random doctor is when she goes in for birth control? Or who turns out to be a heiress and illegitimate daughter of a now deceased US Senator? Or who winds up […]
A cozy romance with some history thrown in
This one didn’t leave much of a lasting impression, but it was a perfect read for the mood I was in. The main character Nicola lives in present day Great Britain working in a gallery, but she has a secret. When she touches objects, she can sometimes see the history of its previous owners. When a woman comes into the shop claiming to possess a wood carving given to her ancestor by Catherine the Great, Nicola gets a short glimpse of Anna, the woman’s ancestor. […]
Silly but fun.
Okay, someone do me a favor and come slap me if I decide to download another romance novel audiobook any time other than a weekend where I preferably can do nothing but sit like a lump while listening to it for however long it takes to finish it. Because this is twice now where I’ve downloaded one (both of them Tessa Dares) and my need to listen to them has gotten in the way of things I should be doing. There’s just something about a […]
