Stay out of the forest…

February 25, 2018 by TheShitWizard 1 Comment

I haven’t read any Naomi Novik before, but this was recommended on one of those ‘If you liked this, you’ll like…’ on finishing The Bear and the Nightingale, with which it shares a fairytale feel and a young woman coming of age and magic, surrounded by a malignant forest. Uprooted isn’t quite as good as The Bear and The Nightingale, but was good enough for me to note Novik as one to read more from. Agnieska lives in the village of Dvernik where, every ten […]

I Didn’t Want This Book to End

August 30, 2017 by lumenatrix 1 Comment

I loved this book so very much. It was the warm, cozy blanket I needed in my life right now. I picked this up thanks to Jenny S’s review from a few weeks ago and I’m so glad I did. “Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not […]

Not Your Grandmother’s Baba Yaga

August 10, 2017 by Jenny S 3 Comments

This had been on my to-read list for quite a while thanks to many glowing Cannonball Read reviews.  I actually bought a copy of it for my sister for Christmas and I tried not to let my foot tap too loudly as I waited for her to finish it.  It was worth the wait. As a kid, one of my favorite book series was Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea trilogy.  I liked the way it pulled me into another world, so different from my own, but […]

Books! All the Books!

December 16, 2016 by Beth Ellen 5 Comments

Thank you, thank you, thank you Mrs. Julien! I didn’t realize the other day that Katie totally gave us each other, but it’s worked out stupendously. I received a Slightly Dangerous by Mary Balogh the other day in ebook form (how I read most of my romances), and then came home yesterday to this lovely sight! I’ve wanted to read Uprooted for a couple of years now, and as a baker I love new cookbooks. Especially ones specifically designed for home baking at its best. […]

Wherein I disagree with every single other Cannonballer who has reviewed this book

December 30, 2015 by Amanda 8 Comments

I did not love this book.  The more I think about it, I’m not sure I even liked it.  Was some of the writing very pretty?  Yes.  Was the main character likeable?  Sure.  But that’s about it for positives for this book, in my opinion.  Obviously I’m in the minority on this, so please don’t let my…ambivalence about this book stop you from reading it. A brief summary of the plot.  Agnieszka is born in a village protected by the Dragon, who is a 150 […]

Climbing, forever trying/Find your way out of the wild, wild wood.*

December 1, 2015 by scootsa1000 3 Comments

As a fairly dedicated Cannonballer, I am embarrassed that it took me so long to read Uprooted. After Hillary M, yesknopemaybe, narfna, alwaysanswerb, Quorren, Caitlin, crystalclear, Malin, and ElCicco all gave this book either 4 or 5 stars, I should have downloaded without hesitation, or gone out to the bookstore and bought it. But I didn’t. I waited around for my library to finally get it, and put my name on the list. And I forgot about it. And then it was my turn. And […]
