Jamie take two

Just Jamie  by Terri Libenson

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first read the graphic novel, Just Jamie by Terri Libenson in 2019. I only went back for a second round as I could not remember anything about it. In fact, it was to the point that I even questioned if I had read it. Well, I did have one image in my head, but it did not help much in remembering the story. However, my rating of five back then, is now 3.5 to 4 rating. This book was good, and I liked how the characters […]

More than a broken heart

The Faint f Heart by Kerilynn Wilson

April 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to a few bumps in the story arc of The Faint f Heart, but particularly due to the artwork, this book is a 4.5 (rounded up to 5). This is a love story to emotions and feelings. It has realistic, science-fiction and fantasy vibes but is all too likely to happen scenario, or at least is within reason. When you play with the heart, emotions happen, and Kerilynn Wilson explores what happens when people find a way to stop feeling those emotions.   June […]

I might change the title of this review when I either remember it or find my notes for this really cool line I wanted to use

Emmie & Friends Truly Tyler by Terri Libenson

December 22, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Truly Tyler in the Emmie & Friends series might be my favorite of the group. I have enjoyed the others by Terri Libenson, but after a bit it felt like I was reading the same one over.  This time we are focusing on a side character who is male. In the author afterwards, Libenson mentions how this was for them, among other fun facts. We follow two of the characters, Tyler and Emmie (switching between their points of view) and see how the same situation can be […]

A heartwarming story about poop

I Eat Poop: A Dung Beetle Story by Mark Pett

September 30, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You might not want to recommend this book out loud in a group of mixed company as you will get a few looks, giggles, and teasing. I Eat Poop: A Dung Beetle Story is your “kid eats an odd food, is afraid he will be teased like (you will learn as we go along) his ex-best friend, and the lesson he learns about being himself.”  This time it is just with a dung beetle and other creatures. There is kid humor, and at the end […]

Cockle your own Doo

Crow of His Own by Megan Dowd Lambert

February 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The main reason I enjoyed A Crow of His Own is that there is the theme of being yourself but not with a unicorn. This time Megan Dowd Lambert’s rooster, Clyde, has to fill the shoes of the great Larry. But there is no way he could as he just keeps embarrassing himself, and the other farm animals will not give him a chance to find out who he is. That is, expect for one goose, who knows what to say and do. Overall the […]

One Odd Dog to Go

Odd Dog Out by Rob Biddulph

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This weekend was a weekend filled with picture book reading, three graphic novels, a trip to drop the nephew off at his father’s and rewatching of the movie Coco (if you have not seen it, LOTS OF TISSUES required). In other words, a normal weekend that had a little bit of everything to fit the “at the moment” mood. And one of those moods was Odd. I have been putting off the picture book Odd Dog Out since I first found the reader copy. I […]
