She and Green

The Life of a Crayon: A Colorful Story of Never-Ending Beginnings by Christopher Willard and Tara Wosiski

December 20, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a young girl gets a brand-new box of crayons, the adventures begin. But one crayon, Green, is the one that we follow. This is her favorite color, and we see how the many green things come into play (and drawing) as she grows. Not only does she have fun and is artistic but learns lessons too. Such as we might get our paintings praised if on the paper, but on the wall not so much. And to have patience as during the autumn months […]

The Genius Under the Table: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain by Eugene Yelchin

August 8, 2022 by BlackRaven 3 Comments

I had not realized how recently published The Genius Under the Table: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain by Eugene Yelchin was. I figured this was a 1990s books or even earlier due the 1980s style of cover. But then again, since the author was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s it is probably appropriate to have that feeling to the cover. We learn about the author/illustrator in a way only they can tell us. The troubles, the love, the misunderstandings, the political and […]

My Pencil, My Pal, My Friend

My Pencil and Me by Sara Varon

February 17, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had not wanted to read My Pencil and Me by Sara Varon when I read about it. I am not sure why, but perhaps it was that odd look to their illustrations. Or perhaps it was just the story was not what I was looking for at the time. When I finally did pick up a copy of the book, I was not OMG This is the BEST, but I did know that there were several people out there that would think that. And […]

Randy Randy you’re a dandy!

Randy, the Badly Drawn Horse by T. L. McBeth

February 5, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at the description of the book Randy, the Badly Drawn Horse.  All it says is “Title has strikethrough on “badly drawn.” Is this all that T. L. McBeth’s book is? Just a book with the words “badly drawn” with a slash trough it? It does not even mention the fact that “badly drawn” is replaced with a red, capitalized BEAUTIFUL! It does not mention that Randy tells the story or the fact that Randy is well, less than a traditional looking horse […]

Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story by Debbie Tung

September 10, 2019 by Ale Leave a Comment

The lovely faintingviolet read this recently, and her review prompted me to immediately request it from my library. I am an extroverted introvert (I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s true), and an INFJ on the Meyers Briggs scale, so when faintingviolet said that Debbie Tung’s Quiet Girl in a Noisy World hit all the right spots for her (an also INFJ and an introvert), I decided to give this a go. I’m not usually one for graphic novels, but I’m trying new things […]

Anyone can learn to draw a LION!!

Ed Emberley's Drawing Books by Ed Emberley

December 21, 2016 by ChainedVase 5 Comments

(This is a review of a book series but I’ll count it as one review. I highly recommend any of these books.) Sometime last year on a Pajiba comment thread, I was reminded of Ed Emberley’s drawing books. I knew I had one of his books as a kid; I could so clearly see the cover in my mind’s eye (pictured above). I know that I used the book to learn to draw, because at the age of about 7-8, I had drawn a […]
