CBRBingo – Illustrated. A delightful romp

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

September 28, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Recently I was singing, well, really, yelling, the praises of the reboot of She-ra: Princesses of Power and its creator Noelle Stevenson on my Facespace page. Many like-minded folks also sung along. Someone commented asking if I had read Lumberjanes (I had) and Nimona (I had not) so here we are! Brief aside: if you like things that are awesome, you should read the Lumberjanes and watch She-ra. I binged through She-ra on a sick day and I have zero regrets about it. Stevenson creates […]

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

September 25, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do I like Nimona? Honestly? I am not sure. Let me start at the beginning: Nimona is a girl who invites herself to become the sidekick of Lord Ballister Blackheart, the infamous, has a pretty cool metal arm, villain of the village. Of course, nothing is black and white; there is a side story about Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and why Lord Blackheart became evil but also why Sir Goldenloin is the “hero,” plus our Nimona who is an “impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for […]

“I would like to point out that I specifically asked for no hijinks…”

Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass by Lilah Sturges, polterink

July 25, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo – Rainbow Flag! The Lumberjanes’ latest adventure begins when troop leader Jen takes the scouts on an orienteering lesson.  Naturally, weird things begin to happen despite Jen’s plee for “no hijinks!” but the girls aren’t really to blame. Rather, their bizarre compass seems to be acting up, and the ‘janes start disappearing one by one, thrown into some sort of alternate void where they meet a cohort of robot butlers.  EVIL Robot Butlers?! But which conflict is worse: taking down a bunch of evil […]

Graphic Novel Flop

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure if there were pages missing from my copy or there is a series before this that filled in some blanks, but the entire time I was reading I felt like I was in the middle of the story. I never saw what I would consider a beginning and when it ended I was thinking “Wait…that’s it? Shouldn’t there have been some kind of wrap up?” I know this is a series, but still the story ends where it started, in the […]

Lumberjanes is always a delight

January 21, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

How does Lumberjanes get and stay SO GOOD?! Let me correct myself slightly: of course I always knew Lumberjanes would be good: Noelle Stevenson has always been great, and upon first reading about the plot, I was sure she’d make something wonderful. Yet Lumberjanes consistently goes beyond my wildest imaginations. It’s not just silly, it’s also clever. It’s not just full of heart, it has important messages to tell us without bashing us over the head with them. It’s not just full of girl power, […]

More like Bore: Goddess of Thunder

September 21, 2017 by Halbs 1 Comment

This book includes three issues of the current Thor run, an issue of Thor Annual (a periodic collection of one-shot stories) and a What If? story from forty years ago (a story outside of the normal Marvel timeline). Unfortunately, despite the buffet of options, this collection features little thriller and a lot of filler. I’m disappointed that Marvel would put out a trade with only a few lackluster issues and then slap in some random Thor comics in the back. However, I did think that the […]
