I really WANTED to fall in love with Nimona. It seemed like such an obvious pairing: Nimona the impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy and Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta. These two setting off to prove the heroes aren’t always heroic? Done. But… I only liked this one and caught myself more than once skipping ahead to “get on with the story”. What were my problems? Inconsistent backstory and inconsistent characterizations. From the beginning we learn that while students at […]
She can shapeshift into a shark with boobs!
4.5 stars Because I have a lot of reviews to catch up on, thanks to my clumsiness which caused my brain to get rattled and shook up, I’m once again resorting to plot summary via Goodreads: Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: to prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies […]
Cute, but not for me
I regularly read all kinds of books, including young adult and children’s literature, but this is the first time I’ve ever felt too old to enjoy a book for kids. That being said, I can’t fault it just because I’m not in the target demographic. I think it’d be a fun series of comics for preteens and young teenagers. Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five fun girls who are living it up at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for ladies into […]
A Quick Must Read
Definitely the cutest book I’ve read this year. I had a smile on my face throughout the entirety of it. Run, don’t walk, to your local library or bookstore to read it. I really think it’d be enjoyable to graphic novel newbies as well as readers more versed in the genre. Nimona joins up as the sidekick to Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta against the kingdom’s current hero, Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin. Nimona is a complete joy to watch as she shapeshifts her […]
A disappointing disconnect for me
This review fills me with the sads, you guys. When I first heard about this book, I was so.very.excited. Girls kicking ass and taking names at summer camp? Yes. Girls who are unconventional in appearance and a team with no cattiness? Yes. Girls who are empowered and unashamed of their very beings? Yes. And yet. And yet… The first volume finds us at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for hard-core-lady-types, where counselor Jen’s cabin solemnly swears they are up to no good at […]
Cheeky shape-changing sociopathic sidekick and roguish one-armed villain will worm their way into your heart.
I don’t like to brag*, but due to random happenstance, I actually followed Nimona in its original run as a web comic from the very first entry. I somehow started following Noelle Stevenson on Tumblr (probably because of her Broship of the Ring fanart) and then she started Nimona, and I was hooked. *Lies. For a year and a half, two days a week I received the new Nimona pages in my outdated Microsoft Outlook work email inbox. Best two days of the week. It […]
