Damnit, Disney.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

February 2, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

Now I have more reason to be pissed about the animated adaptation of Nimona being cancelled by Disney. Them buying Blue Sky Studios and immediately burying one of their most promising projects was enough of a reason for me to be angry, but I hadn’t even read the graphic novel at the time of seeing that news, so I didn’t know if I was right to be so upset. People seemed to love Nimona, though, it sounded like a promising property for an animated movie, […]

She Grows On You

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

More comfort reads! More comfort reads! Nimona is a real favourite of mine. Before Noelle Stevenson saw success with the She-Ra series, she was writing Nimona—an absolutely glorious webcomic-turned actual-comic. The setting of Nimona isn’t actually too far divorced from what we see in She-Ra: rather high fantasy on the surface, with a lot of nerdy science and magi-tech elements scattered throughout. We have heroic and villainous knights in shining armour with jousting sticks but said knights also have high-tech research labs where they develop […]

CBRBingo – Illustrated. A delightful romp

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

September 28, 2019 by ardaigle Leave a Comment

Recently I was singing, well, really, yelling, the praises of the reboot of She-ra: Princesses of Power and its creator Noelle Stevenson on my Facespace page. Many like-minded folks also sung along. Someone commented asking if I had read Lumberjanes (I had) and Nimona (I had not) so here we are! Brief aside: if you like things that are awesome, you should read the Lumberjanes and watch She-ra. I binged through She-ra on a sick day and I have zero regrets about it. Stevenson creates […]

Good, Evil and the Vast In Between

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

August 29, 2016 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Nimona, a graphic novel that was a finalist for the National Book Award, features knights and dragons and beings with amazing powers. It is not, however, your typical good versus evil story. Nimona is full of wonderful shades of gray in the form of its three main characters: Nimona, Ballister Blackheart, and Ambrosius Goldenloin. Young Nimona, a teen, shows up at the lair of the well known supervillain Ballistair Blackheart to become his uninvited sidekick. She is more than ready to get involved in evil […]

For All the Monster Girls Out There

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

January 1, 2016 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Nimona is a lively and fast read. it will make you laugh and break your heart. Nimona appears to be a teen girl. Nimona arrives one day at the castle of professional villain, Lord Ballister Blackheart and insists on becoming his sidekick. Havoc follows Nimona wherever she goes. It quickly becomes clear that Blackheart doesn’t really have his heart in being a villain, and the purported good guys, may not be so good. Nimona challenges the way Blackheart looks at himself and his relationship with […]

I see where we were going with this one, it just didn’t get me there.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

I really WANTED to fall in love with Nimona. It seemed like such an obvious pairing: Nimona the impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy and Lord Ballister Blackheart, a villain with a vendetta. These two setting off to prove the heroes aren’t always heroic? Done. But… I only liked this one and caught myself more than once skipping ahead to “get on with the story”. What were my problems? Inconsistent backstory and inconsistent characterizations. From the beginning we learn that while students at […]
