Now I have more reason to be pissed about the animated adaptation of Nimona being cancelled by Disney. Them buying Blue Sky Studios and immediately burying one of their most promising projects was enough of a reason for me to be angry, but I hadn’t even read the graphic novel at the time of seeing that news, so I didn’t know if I was right to be so upset. People seemed to love Nimona, though, it sounded like a promising property for an animated movie, and I was pretty certain I’d like it. Yesterday, I at last put that assumption to the test.
Turns out Nimona is, in all actuality, oodles of fun. Like many of my favorite comics/graphic novels, Nimona cranks out the jokes and wit panel after panel. The 200+ pages fly by and left me wanting a sequel, partly for more fun misadventures, but mostly for more development of Nimona the character, as well as more development of things between Goldenloin and Blackheart. I feel like we were just getting to know these characters on a deeper, more emotional level and then it just… ends. Damnit.
Unfortunately, there’s no news, or even hints, of a follow-up and, like I mentioned already, even the feature-length film of it was nixed. Here I sit, then, wanting more Nimona content with no way of getting it. Guess I have to seek out more of Stevenson’s work instead. I think I read at least some of Lumberjanes, but what’s the harm in reading some more? And I see they have released a work of graphic non-fiction recently.
