I love a good pun and Lumberjanes continually delivers. The title of the fifth volume plays on band in the literal and “come together” uses. Because this is the Lumberjanes, the literal band is made of mer-people, and coming together is one of the best traits of these hard core lady types. This collection of comics opens with a flash back to the first day of summer camp as we see each girl being dropped off. These scenes give us a brief peak into their […]
Friendship to the Max?
In volume four, Out of Time, the Lumberjanes once again are faced with supernatural forces but the real challenge comes from within. Jealousy and refusal to stand up for a friend can be devastating to friendships. In this collection of comics, Lumberjanes young and old grapple with the motto “Friendship to the Max”. What starts as an innocent camping trip with their long suffering councilor Jen, turns into a rescue mission when a blizzard mysteriously blankets the area. Separated from her girls, Jen is injured and […]
A Terrible Plan is an excellent read
At Wonder Con we wandered past the Boom!Box and Archaia publishing table and noticed that we were severely behind in our Lumberjanes collection. This situation was immediately rectified. Volume one previously reviewed in I want to be a Lumberjane. In volume three, A Terrible Plan, Noelle Stevenson and Shannon Watters continue to produce highly entertaining Lumberjane stories with the help of some talented artists. A detail I love about the Lumberjanes graphic novels are how each chapter starts with a page from the Lumberjane field manual […]
These are the books I worry about my nephew for
Ugh….why does it have to be Lumberjanes?? Why not Lumberjohns…..wait, Lumberjames?! That’s right! First we ALMOST have a girl for president and then we have to sit here and lose our valuable logging industry to the worldwide GYNOCRACY! I worry about what my 10 year old nephew will do when he thinks he is picking up a a wholesome boyscout comic book and this is what he reads. Girls not needing boys, girls running around causing trouble, girls having great adventures, but not thinking about […]
Low on the Lumberjane Scale
I have really liked the Lumberjanes series so far, but I gotta say number 5 was a little bit of a let-down. The basic storyline follows 5 friends and their camp counsellor through a summer of camp sponsored by a vaguely scout-like organization, the eponymous Lumberjanes. Except of course that this is not your typical scouting group, and not your typical summer camp. Strange events and encounters of the supernatural variety will happen, and the camp and its director are most certainly involved somehow. Each […]
Jen is the best.
So I got all whiny about Vol. 3, which is the trade published right after Lumberjanes transitioned from a limited series to an ongoing one. I wasn’t quite sure how to feel about it. They changed the artists all around (I hate when comics do that), and the story felt less silly and frenetic. It wasn’t bad, just different. But Brooke Allen is back as the artist here in Vol. 4 (hooray!), and the story felt more like it did in Vols. 1 & 2 […]
