The rom-com romp

Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang

March 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was hesitant to start Lunar New Year Love Story for a few reasons: I am not a romance reader; I thought the use of Leuyen Pham as the illustrator was an odd choice; and as I like Gene Luen Yang, would I build this book up too much and it would not live up to my hype?  Well, I am still not a romance reader and the arc was not how I run my romance life, but it was fun and heartwarming. (Granted if […]

Chinese Zodiac Animals Coloring Book: 36 Prints of Fun and Creativity for Kids by Xin Lin

January 8, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I just found the most adorable, easy to color coloring book. It is called, Chinese Zodiac Animals Coloring Book: 36 Prints of Fun and Creativity for Kids. But that should say for Kids and Kids at heart. The artist is Xin Lin.  And while the text might not be the most in depth and might be a loose translation of the characteristics of the signs, it is a fun way to introduce the subject. However, the beginning of the book is packed with a lot […]

Tomorrow Is New Year's Day: Seollal, A Korean Celebration of the Lunar New Year by Aram Kim

One White Crane: A Bilingual Counting Book of the Months by Vickie Lee

November 1, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was thinking the other day that I want to travel. Well, since my bank account really laughed at me, I decided to go to the bookstore and find some books. And since I am spoiled, I found two books in online reader copies to read. The first Tomorrow Is New Year’s Day: Seollal, A Korean Celebration of the Lunar New Year by Aram Kim and the second was One White Crane: A Bilingual Counting Book of the Months by Vickie Lee and illustrated by […]

Celebrate, come on!

Happy Lunar New Year (Sesame Street) by Sesame Street

May 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Does your child (or even you) like Sesame Street or Elmo in particular? I know that Little Red Monster (as he was once called) is not everyone’s favorite, but he is a good messenger for children (even if some of us still remember the hoopla of Tickle Me Elmo).  One thing I have always enjoyed about Sesame Street (I am “When Snuffy was Big Birds imaginary fiend” old so I am old friends with the Street of Sesame) is that they teach things at […]

Maybe my second favorite non-Christian holiday celebrating book.

Two New Years by Richard Ho

April 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two New Years might be my second favorite non-Christian holiday book for 2023. Or even my first as it does mention Lunar New Year. I will start with the afterwards because it talks about the pieces of a simple, but deceptively not simple story. This afterwards describes the two New Year celebrations parts and the culture. Richard Ho talks about why names are used, what the rams horn means, and the foods similarities. This is because Ho is talking about the two cultures that he […]

The more serious New Year Story

New Year (a Lunar New Year Book for Kids) by Mei Zihan

February 1, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

New Year (a Lunar New Year Book for Kids) has a mature theme. Even the description of this book from the publisher uses words that set the tone of the book. It says it is a “moving…cride Coeur” and “dislocation is countered by acceptance…” and “Chinese diaspora.”  Huh? I just wanted a nice book about the Chinese New Year. I mean, it is a nice book that Mei Zihan has created, but well over the head of most picture book readers. I went farther along […]
