This one was hard, but ultimately a worthy read

No One Crosses the Wolf: A Memoir by Lisa Nikolidakis

December 30, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Wow, this book was a hard read. The author Lisa Nikolidakis grew up Greek with a capital G. She spent her life trying to please her father and keep her family together. She suffered physical and mental abuse, violence, threats of violence, and a constant sense of impending doom. She tells stories of the magnitude of abuse throughout the book. Some of it is small – a slight here or there, favoritism, mild neglect, etc. It travels all the way to abuse of herself and […]

I was dealing with work turmoil and on vacation for most of June so I didn’t get the chance to write as many in depth reviews as I’d have liked to. Which is a shame because some of these deserved a longer look; I just didn’t have the time or energy… The Cage **** I went back-and-forth on my review. I’ve been giving out a lot of 4-star reviews lately and considered docking the book for that reason since it’s very borderline. But the more I […]

Greek Honeymoon

The Child of Judas by Violet Winspear

February 2, 2022 by Pooja 4 Comments

Fenny is in love with her cousin’s fiancé, but he’s barely ever noticed her. Yet when Penela leaves him at the altar, Fenny steps in, tricking him by pretending to be her cousin at the wedding- and Lion is quite unhappy when he finds out, after they are already wed. This was a pretty crazysauce premise. Fenny has a bad case of coup de foudre and seizes the chance to become Lion’s wife, even though she knows how bad it is to trick him like […]

Love &…well, more love…

Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch

August 2, 2021 by chelz.hawk Leave a Comment

“Do you think it’s possible that you can believe in me for a bit? How do you believe in someone who left when you were eight years old? And how was I supposed to manage the enormous chasm that existed between how he said he felt about me and what his actions said he felt about me?” Liv thought her biggest problem was trying to find a way to tell her boyfriend that she wants to attend art school rather than follow him to Stanford. […]

Dreams of an Extraordinary Life.

The Dress and the Girl by Camille Andros

August 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In The Dress and the Girl by Camille Andros a young girl dreams of having an extraordinary life. While wearing her favorite dress her mother made her, she goes and enjoys the simple life of her village: watching the sunset, doing chores, picking flowers, going to school, playing and riding in wagons. One day, her family takes a special trip. They are emigrating to a new country. And while the girl and dress still play and go to school, instead of a wagon they are […]

“Lady, did you ever see anyone shot by a gun without bleeding?”

Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami

July 6, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

My year of Murakami continues with Sputnik Sweetheart, a brooding and disturbing book about connection and isolation, what kind of pants people are wearing, and writing. While it’s not my favorite Murakami work, it’s still more gripping and provocative than most of the fifty-something books I’ve read this year. All of his books either change my worldview or spur me towards my own creative pursuits. That’s good art. Sputnik‘s protagonist is the typical Murakamian narrator. Male. Enjoys alcohol and thinking, does ok with the ladies, interested […]
