CBR Bingo: Summer – The book takes place presumably during the summer because it’s hurricane season. But, maybe I don’t know enough about when hurricane season is or I’m already forgetting details that were directly mentioned in the book.
I found this author through another reviewer here on Cannonball Read. I’ve been tearing through Romance and Romantasy with mixed results. So, when I saw a promising review for this author, I popped her books on my library holds list. This one came through first, and I would certainly read others that she’s written.
Meena is a lawyer working in Washington DC, she has political aspirations that are intertwined with her currently-on-a-break beau’s political aspirations. But! Before she can try to run as a couple or even run her own race, she has to clean out the biggest skeleton in her closet. She’s been married for a decade to Nikhil who is still back in her hometown in Texas. Meena decides to finally go get that divorce. In person. During hurricane season. Between the time that Meena gets on a plane in DC and when she lands in Houston, a storm that wasn’t newsworthy has turned into a major meteorological threat. Her plan to dip in, get papers signed, and dip out has been thwarted. She now has to spend the storm hunkered down in her old house that her not-yet-ex still lives in with her not-yet-ex.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I made some dubious choices staying up too late to finish it, so there’s that. There were some issues for pacing for me. During the storm there was a lot happening and there was quite a lot of forward movement. But, once the storm started to die down and there wasn’t some major natural disaster forcing proximity, things started get a bit slower. Regardless, the chemistry between the characters is fun and it’s interesting to see how two people come back together after spending a decade growing on their own.
