You are *that* author

Bitsy Bat, Snow Star by Kaz Windness

March 6, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently the “You are that author???” realization has come into play for my reading adventures. You see the Kaz Windness of the Bitsy Bat Series is the same Kaz Windness of  If UR Stabby, which is if Edward Gorey was on some serious “good stuff” if you get my meaning. Whereas Bitsy Bat is in a book called Bitsy Bat, Snow Star. And look at that cover! That little berry nose! The eyebrows. (EYEBROWS on a BAT!!) Those mittens on their feet!  The sparkle in […]

An account of life

I Won't Pretend These Missiles Are Stars: Life in Iran During the 12-Day War by Tehran's Cartoonist Collective / The Cartoonist Collective

March 2, 2026 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The short stories inside of I Won’t Pretend These Missiles Are Stars by Tehran’s Cartoonist Collective deal with the weeks of war between Israel and Iran. Set in Iran, each of the people giving their story has a different way of dealing or not dealing with the events around them. Some worry about the big picture (death), others worry that they never got to wear the special outfit to their presentation. Each author has a unique way of showing what was and wasn’t important to […]

If anyone can, a magical Yeti… might

Penny and the Yeti b by Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin

February 27, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When April 2026 comes, you readers of this review will have a plethora of choices. And I hope one of those is Penny and the Yeti by Jimmy Gaspero and Amber Akin. Read via an online reader copy, I plan on finding a finished copy as there are some things I think might make more sense if I can physically hold a book in hand and explore this deceptively simple seeming story. This book is not perfect. Which, yes, is an odd thing to start […]

The jokes are not the only thing landing punches

Karate Prom by Kyle Starks

February 26, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Okay, Karate Prom by Kyle Starks was funny, with the loving and the punching and the bowling. If I have to describe it in one sentence, it is if Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, 1990s teen Nickelodeon, and Scooby Doo made a book baby. Never have I ever thought that ninjas, crazy ex-crime-girlfriends-currently helping her brother run the family-cartelle, teenagers, bowling and a high school prom would be so funny. By the end two things happened that I was very excited about (I won’t say exactly […]

And did I mention, I really hated the ending?

When We Ride by Rex Ogle

February 26, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I hate the ending of When We Ride by Rex Ogle. I cannot believe that Rex Ogle is the same Rex Ogle that wrote the graphic novels Four Eyes and Pizza Face. Or Swan Lake: Quest for the Kingdoms or the Doña Quixote series (as Rey Tercoero).  Have I mentioned I hated the ending of Ogle’s book? I understand why it had to be this way, but still, I hated the ending. Anyway, up to that point (so guess a decent track record, at the […]

When you’re near this hole in the ground, you’re in deep doo-doo

The Deep Well by Laura Creedle

February 26, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Deep Well by Laura Creedle Is it real or imaginary or something else? There were a few plot holes for me, but overall it was a nice read. Well, not nice but cozy … okay not cozy, I mean… Okay, just read it and you’ll know what I mean. Triggers include, but are not limited to: death, violence, cults, bullying, assault, gun violence, stalking, suggested assault of a minor. April, the main character of Creedle’s story, is almost 17. She is waiting for her […]
