The Deep Well by Laura Creedle
Is it real or imaginary or something else? There were a few plot holes for me, but overall it was a nice read. Well, not nice but cozy … okay not cozy, I mean… Okay, just read it and you’ll know what I mean. Triggers include, but are not limited to: death, violence, cults, bullying, assault, gun violence, stalking, suggested assault of a minor.
April, the main character of Creedle’s story, is almost 17. She is waiting for her birthday and the end of days. Or so the doomsday cult that was formed around the events twelve years earlier believe and April will be the catalyst for that (and other things). Typical teen drama happens: bullies, lost friendships, issues with siblings. Only things are extra level because of horror gawkers, movie buffs (a “based on true events” movie was made of April’s life), with cult members and people wanting to stop the end of the world stalking and harassing her. Plus she hears a voice telling her all sorts of horrible things. Not to mention, she has a crazy aunt, odd flashes of her 5-year-old self, plus a father who is presumed dead..
In other words, there are several cliches happening as well. Teen me would love this book, with adult me seeing the flaws. Still, I didn’t dislike things, just wasn’t wowed by them. Since I have read many books over the decades, I can’t remember the thriller/horror books I am trying to think of that reminded me of this novel, but do know Teen Killers Club by Lily Sparks and The King is Dead by Dean Benjamin came to mind when I was reading. Neither novel has similar plots, but I had similar feelings about them. Such as the way people unfold, the believability of things, and style of writing.
Like most good (and bad) paranormal-thriller-horror stories, the idea of otherworldly things or other dimensions is left up to you to decide if it is real or not. The book leans towards yes, there are supernatural elements, but the biggest mystery answers come from an all too real world. I still have questions, but even if there is a sequel I probably won’t continue as that will weaken anything that was engaging.
