Science, but fun

Angela’s Glacier by Jordan Scott

Climbing the Volcano by Curtis Manley

October 23, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Science was never my thing growing up. However, maybe if I was exposed to/had more science based stories, that mixed effortlessly fact and fiction, I might have gotten into things more. The titles (both due January 2024 and read via online reader copies) Angela’s Glacier and Climbing the Volcano would be the first two I would want to read.  Jordan Scott’s Angela’s Glacier is a unique way of telling us to “stop and smell the glacier.” Or for most of us, to stop and smell […]

My Joanna Ho kick

One Day by Joanna Ho

On the Tip of a Wave: How Ai Weiwei's Art Is Changing the Tide? by Joanna Ho

October 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you know picture books and diverse picture books, you probably know Eyes That Kiss in the Corners and Eyes That Speak to the Stars by Joanna Ho. But do you know Say My Name or Playing at the Border: A Story of Yo-Yo Ma? Or what about One Day or  On the Tip of a Wave: How Ai Weiwei’s Art Is Changing the Tide? I have had the pleasure of reading them all (I was on a Joanna Ho kick recently, though have not […]

Ah! Love!

Eyes That Weave the World’s Wonders by Joanna Ho

Love Grows by Ruth Spiro

Say It with Me (Dilo Conmigo) by Nancy S. Torres

October 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes a theme takes a little while to find when I look at books to write as one fun, roundup review. but the three below took no time at all to find a connection. Each one is about love. Love of family, love of yourself, and love even when we are far away from our loved ones.  Love of family and self is the theme in Eyes That Weave the World’s Wonders. Joanna Ho and Liz Kleinrock (also of Come and Join Us!: 18 Holidays […]

So, my neighbor is a dinosaur

Bolivar by Sean Rubin

October 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Bolivar by Sean Rubin is a cute book about what we see and do not see, and how that affects us and those around us. Humorous moments will have you laughing, but also you will also think. My library version (a little beat up and I assumed well read) was an oversized “art looking” or child coffee table book (if children had coffee tables). The oversized format might turn off some of the slightly older readers (the book is for ages 8 up to 10 […]

Diversity

What Rosa Brought by Jacob Sager Weinstein

Come and Join Us!: 18 Holidays Celebrated All Year Long by Liz Kleinrock

Once Upon a Sari by Zenia Wadhwani

October 18, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I posted on my Facebook page a couple images from books I was promoting that day. One was a book I had posted here before, The Night Before Eid: A Muslim Family Story, by Aya Khalil and the other What Rosa Brought by Jacob Sager Weinstein. Considering current events, I wanted to promote love, positivity and acceptance.  And I cannot think of two better books to show this. Except maybe Once Upon a Sari by Zenia Wadhwani. Or Come and Join Us! 18 Holidays […]

The author’s love for the story and man

Enlightened by Sachi Ediriweera

October 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The graphic novel Enlightened is with lovely illustrations that fit the tone of things. The story is modern voiced to help today’s reader understand the journey of one man who went on to do great things. Sometimes things are a little lofty, yet not overly pushy, but still not as modest as could be. And overall, this is a fun and delightful experience book. Sachi Ediriweera’s story comes from the experiences of their childhood, learning the teachings of and about the Buddha. The man Siddhartha […]
