Moms and Sequels

Busy Betty & the Circus Surprise  by Reese Witherspoon

Because I'm Your Mom by Ahmet Zappa

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Many times, a sequel does not live up to the first one. And tht is true in movies and books. However, these sequels are good follow ups and stand alone. And while I have not read the prequel to Ahmet Zappa’s reviewed book, I am sure it is similar and does justice to it. Also, both of these books focus on moms and with Mothers Day coming up, you might want to give them a look-see (though the Busy Betty and the Circus Surprises is not […]

Be all you can be

I Can Be All Three by  Salima Alikhan

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is a simple, but powerful story of how one child has many parts to her. Three in fact (which is why the title is I Can Be All Three). The first part is her father and his Indian heritage, the second her mother’s German heritage and finally the third is her school and growing up American parts. But when her classroom assignment is to pick something that represents you and your culture for the Multicultural Day celebration, she is unsure how to choose. After […]

Awful Melodies but okay read

The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow

April 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is my review for the graphic novel: The Popularity Papers: Book Five: The Awesomely Awful Melodies of Lydia Goldblatt and Julie Graham-Chang by Amy Ignatow Part of my issue with this book was that it is book five of the series, and it is not a series you can pick up in the middle of it. I find that if a book can stand alone, but still be a continuation, that is a good book/series. And while me the (physical) adult, could pick things up, […]

More than a broken heart

The Faint f Heart by Kerilynn Wilson

April 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to a few bumps in the story arc of The Faint f Heart, but particularly due to the artwork, this book is a 4.5 (rounded up to 5). This is a love story to emotions and feelings. It has realistic, science-fiction and fantasy vibes but is all too likely to happen scenario, or at least is within reason. When you play with the heart, emotions happen, and Kerilynn Wilson explores what happens when people find a way to stop feeling those emotions.   June […]

Up, Up and Talking Cats

The Stupendous Switcheroo: New Powers Every 24 Hours by Mary Winn Heider

April 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Superheroes and not so superheroes come together for hijinks, secrets, maybe some friendships and one rad bath (and I don’t mean cool) in The Stupendous Switcheroo: New Powers Every 24 Hours by Mary Winn Heider. This is a fun book for reluctant and readers alike. Both illustrations (by Chad Sell who seems to be known for cartoon like imagery (or at least by me, but his is the author/illustrator to the Cardboard Kingdom graphic novel series) that are colorful, round, and bubbly, silly and familiar […]

The universal language of unconditional love

Quiet Time with My Seeya by Dinalie Dabarera

April 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport country When you see a title like, Quiet Time with My Seeya (or at least me), I assume that you will get an outlined story. Meaning: Step one: Grandparent is coming. Or child goes to grandparent. Step two: Child is bored, and grandparent makes magic. Or the child knows grandparent makes magic. Step three: They have lots of fun, maybe learning something new, but always a happy generational story.   There is nothing wrong with this story format. It is a good format and I like […]
