Two languages one story

Okāwīsimāw Omēkiwin Askīhkānihk Ohci: Auntie’s Rez Surprise by Heather O’Watch

May 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My 250 words for a review are almost taken up by the Nehiyaw title, Okāwīsimāw Omēkiwin Askīhkānihk Ohci: Auntie’s Rez Surprise (translated by Dorothy Thunder). I am sorry to say there was not a glossary or pronunciation guide in either of the versions I read (I also read the English only version, just titled Auntie’s Rez Surprise). Therefore, I was unable to truly appreciate the language. At first the dual languages were a bit confusing, making the pages crowded, but I quickly was able to […]

A cone is a dogs best friend

Cone Dog by Sarah Howden

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes a book holds its own even as a sequel/companion to another. However, I am not sure if Cone Dog is doing that. The companion of Sarah Howden’s Cone Cat, there are probably similarities, but since one is a dog, and the other a cat, there will be differences. Not to mention because of that, there will be “one is preferred over the other” campaigns. Carmen Mok’s illustrations are probably more amusing than the story for me, as they are cute and cartoon-like, without being […]

Well, at least the bear was cute

Hello, Tiny Bear by Yusuke Yonezu

Going Home by Seymour Chwast

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My round up of books that should be talked about, but are not for me, is below. Both were read via online reader copies, and both are future publications. The first is Hello, Tiny Bear. At first, I was okay, Yusuke Yonezu made a cute bear cub as their main character. I then saw that it was a board book (or would be, remember online reader copy, due late August/early September 2023). And I was, “Okay I am not a toddler; therefore, this simple text […]

A bouquet of flowers

The Best Flower Ever! by Neesha Hudson

May 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A dog (the publisher description says it is an Australian shepherd) feels they have the most special, wonderful, The Best Flower Ever! And they do. Until another dog comes along and says, OH I have a flower, too. And that flower is bigger, shiner, the bees like it better. And then again, another dog comes, and their flower is the best! One lives in the desert, one smells relaxing, one is virtual, one taught the cat to be potty trained. And our shepherd friend becomes […]

The Dog Show Judge and the Ex-Nun

Peg and Rose Solve a Murder by Laurien Berenson

May 2, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Sister-in-laws Peg and Rose never gotten along, but in the interest of repairing their relationship they decide to join a bridge club as partners. When a member of the club is murdered, they decide to work together to find the killer. This was a breezy cozy mystery, with a case that managed to be interesting without being too much of a head scratcher. I really enjoyed the relationship between Peg and Rose, who are attempting to become friends after a long and contentious history, and […]

Sure, I’ll Be Your Ghost

Be My Ghost by Carol J Perry

May 2, 2023 by Melina Leave a Comment

Maureen Doherty isn’t having the best time as the store that she’s worked as a buyer for (and a decorator of?) goes out of business. She’s smart, savvy, and has an awesome dog so things aren’t too terrible for her though for very long, because as soon as she gets home she learns that she has inherited an inn in Haven, Florida from a woman she doesn’t even know.  After verifying that it’s not a hoax, she packs up her things and begins the road […]
