I love all of Rebekah Weatherspoon’s books and dogs, so already biased to love this contemporary Black romance about a couple meeting at a dog shelter. Andre and Janelle unexpectedly meet when trying to rescue the same dog named Zeus. They both want a dog to bring some joy into their lives. There has been a mix-up and they were both promised the pup. Instead of fighting over him, they decide to co-parent for a month and see how it goes. What a lucky dog to have two unexpected rescue parents spoiling him!
They’re both reeling from past relationships. Andre is a successful comic book artist but his ex ran off with someone else. Janelle is also wary after a break-up. With each meet-up with Zeus, they can’t seem to deny an attraction between them. Andre admires how hardworking Janelle is and how passionate she is about training Zeus. Janelle clocks the handsome Andre in line at the shelter but doesn’t want something frivolous to be played. When they finally give in, it’s electric.
This was a lovely Black romance between two people who are reluctant to open themselves back up. I can certainly relate to it, especially as a recent dog mom. I need to find the love of my life somehow at the dog park (when this dang mystery virus is gone). Through the story, they realize they deserve love and it’s worth taking a chance. I wouldn’t mind a follow-up short story to see more of them. The narration was excellent and loved the plus-size rep with both characters. Read this if you are partial to dogs, like spicy sex scenes, and looking for a quick audio read.
