And another thing, I couldn’t even finish this book

And Another Thing by Eoin Colfer

April 4, 2020 by KimMiE" 3 Comments

Not long ago on Facebook, someone posed the question, “When do you give up on a book and stop reading?” I thought about this and determined that, if I look at how many pages I have left in a book and I’m actively dreading it, that’s when I quit. I had 188 pages left in And Another Thing when I just couldn’t stand it anymore. God knows I don’t quit a book likely. I’ve slogged through my share of banality and dreck just to give […]

Dragons and Swamp Folk Underwhelm in the Bayou

Highfire by Eoin Colfer

March 28, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m not sure what I was expecting with Highfire. I was introduced to the author Eoin Colfer via Artemis Fowl which I enjoyed for the first several novels, then lost interest in in the direction the series was going. I like the not entirely original premise of the grumpy powerful being (Vern the dragon) teaming up with and gradually softening to a spunky sidekick (Squib Moreau). The setting of the Bayou, presumably Louisiana, makes for interesting potential in terms of cultural lore. It’s sort of […]

What happens when the last dragon on earth lives in the Bayou?

Highfire by Eoin Colfer

February 4, 2020 by jomidi 1 Comment

Eoin Colfer has penned a bunch of YA/children’s novels.  His extremely popular Artemis Fowl series will soon be a movie.  Highfire is an adult novel, which is more of an adventure tale than a fantasy novel, despite having a vodka loving dragon named Vern as its protagonist. Colfer is funny, funny enough to have been the one to pen book six in the Hitchhiker’s Guide series. The story is set in the swamps in New Orleans and has a memorable cast of characters – the […]

No Human Being is Illegal

Illegal by Eoin Colfer

July 16, 2019 by LanierHgts 2 Comments

“You, who are so-called illegal aliens, must know that no human being is illegal.  That is a contradiction in terms.  Human beings can be beautiful or more beautiful, they can be fat or skinny, they can be right or wrong, but illegal?  How can a human being be illegal?”  Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor So starts this graphic novel geared toward tween/teen readers (I would suggest ages 10 and over).  As a lawyer formerly working in immigration defense, and in light of the […]

Honey don’t

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

The Arctic Incident by Eoin Colfer

The Eternity Code by Eoin Colfer

March 16, 2019 by Shibuyama Leave a Comment

Seveneves was a lot in many ways, and I came out of it just wanting something easy and entertaining; the Artemis Fowl trailer dropped over the holidays, so it was a natural pick. I remembered enjoying the story when I read the first book a very long time ago, and I figured I’d give it another go round to see how it had held up. Sometimes after a lot of broccoli, you just want a handful of popcorn. The series by Eoin Colfer follows the […]
