I do not want to read this book

Somebody to Love by Aurelia Fray

May 7, 2019 by Emmalita 3 Comments

This is my first DNF for the year and I have put this author on my not at any price list. The cover is cute, so I requested it from Netgalley. This is an honest review. I wish I had paid more attention to the description, it might have saved me some heartache. Henry only needed to fix the leaky office pipes. So, when a crazy woman barges in and turns his day upside down, then confesses all her secrets like a challenge, he faces […]

Sometimes it’s best to get out while you still can

Mr. Darcy's Debt by April Floyd

April 21, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Another foray into the world of Pride and Prejudice variations.  I’m not sure how I feel about this one.  In the prologue, Mr. Thomas Bennet is a young man who is friends with the Fitzwilliam family siblings, including Bertram, Reginald, Anne (who will be Darcy’s mother) and Catherine (who will be Lady Catherine).  The party goes ice skating, and Thomas ends up saving Bertram and Anne’s lives, but Bertram ultimately succumbs to the illness that follows. Grateful that his sister is safe, Bertram vows that […]

SPOILERS!!!!! Over halfway and then DNF.

For Better and Worse by Margot Hunt

February 4, 2019 by Chris Leave a Comment

The plot idea behind this book is good. It’s really interesting, but as it is used in this book, it doesn’t quite work. Possible spoilers, though I will try to keep it non-spoilerish. The book opens with a couple on a first date, talking about how, since they are smart, they could get away with killing someone. Then we jump to years later where said couple -Will and Nat (short for Natalie) are married with a young son and the marriage might not be doing […]

A Nazi, a Fascist, a Communist, a novelist, a countrywoman, and a Duchess walk into a bar-and I don’t know what happened because I didn’t finish the book

January 21, 2017 by expandingbookshelf 2 Comments

I hate quitting on books. Hate. It. Because I’m a fast reader, I can usually convince myself to stick with my read. But I white-knuckled my way through about 100 pages of “The Six: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters” before I finally tossed it and moved on. Life’s too short. I’d never heard of the Mitford Sisters before but I guess they’re pretty famous. They were socialites who managed to deliver more drama than the Kardashians. Beautiful, witty, articulate and unpredictable, they were at […]

Nope

January 15, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 7 Comments

I have been previously underwhelmed by Laura Florand, but was heartily encouraged to try, in particular, this and one of her other novels as a better representation of her potential. I’m now very scared I am going to be shunned. Here is the plot summary — it’s basically You’ve Got Mail — in Goodreads’ words: “Welcome to La Maison des Sorcieres. Where the window display is an enchanted forest of sweets, a collection of conical hats delights the eye and the habitues nibble chocolate witches […]

I Just Can’t Do This Anymore

January 15, 2017 by Emmalita 11 Comments

I did not finish this book. I spent days trying to read My American Duchess and I cannot spend anymore of my life on this. The back 40% can’t possibly save the first 60%. Halfway through this book, I realized I hated the characters and the plot. Shortly after that I realized I hated the author. It starts off as a love triangle with all the tension of over cooked spaghetti. American heiress, Merry Pelford has just accepted the marriage proposal of Cedric Allardyce, the […]
