My first Brandon Sanderson 3-Star Read, with a caveat!

October 12, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Sad to say White Sand didn’t quite work for me. That’s a first for me and Brandon Sanderson, but in this instance, I’m hesitant to count it. I didn’t realize until I opened this book up that Sanderson didn’t actually write it. Okay, but wait, let me back up a little. So White Sand is actually Brandon Sanderson’s first completed novel. He put it away for a while after writing it, and then brought it out years later to revamp it, but ultimately, it was […]

Jen is the best.

So I got all whiny about Vol. 3, which is the trade published right after Lumberjanes transitioned from a limited series to an ongoing one. I wasn’t quite sure how to feel about it. They changed the artists all around (I hate when comics do that), and the story felt less silly and frenetic. It wasn’t bad, just different. But Brooke Allen is back as the artist here in Vol. 4 (hooray!), and the story felt more like it did in Vols. 1 & 2 […]

An absolutely perfect little book.

I’ve made no secret of my dismissal of the romance genre. It’s not that I don’t enjoy romance, or am indifferent to love, it’s that I’ve found the heaving bosoms and overflowing adoration to be blindly fantastical and willfully dismissive of actual romance. I’ve generally avoided the genre because I’ve never thought of it as even adequately representing real world love. I know that bodice rippers aren’t all the genre has to offer, but I have never encounter romance that spoke to me. Until Rainbow […]

“I just believe that the interesting time in a career is pre-success, what shaped things, how did you get to this point?”

I wasn’t planning on listening to this book right now, but then a sale happened and here we are. This book was on my to read list starting years ago, when I put together my Goodreads page at the same time as signing up for my first Cannonball Read (that would be number 4). I love listening to people tell me about their lives, whether it’s a friend or acquaintance on the sofa across from me, or if its someone’s memoir or autobiography. Steve Martin […]

Cold and Muted and Excellent

In yesterday’s Chewbacca review, I did my best to sum up the recent transition of the Star Wars comic book rights from Dark Horse to Marvel: Star Wars fans were nervous when Marvel/Disney took over Star Wars comics from Dark Horse. For years, DH had told some amazing stories in the Star Wars universe through the medium of comics. It was unclear whether Marvel would live up to Dark Horse’s standards, or if it would just publish tie-in garbage. While I am only a casual Star […]

What even is this nonsense I just wrote.

Okay, so, context: 1. Superman is my favorite superhero. I have been smitten since watching the old Fleischer Technicolor Superman cartoons my dad bought me on VHS when I was five years old, but the big oaf became a life-long love in 1994 when Lois & Clark premiered on TV. Each iteration I’ve seen since has only made me love the character more (excepting Man of Steel and its sequel, which do not represent anything that I love about the character, which in fact actively takes […]
