Vol. 2 just as non-compliant and awesome as Vol. 1.

September 4, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I waited for this trade for soooo loooong of a time. And then it wasn’t long enough, like in terms of page length; I read it in about twenty minutes (cackling through most of it), and then it was over and I was sad. But it was very good. And now we have to wait even longer for Vol. 3. These are the woes you are in for when you read an ongoing comic series, but especially this one, which is agony. Vol. 2 opens […]

Punny Titles are the Best

August 27, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I love a good pun and Lumberjanes continually delivers.  The title of the fifth volume plays on band in the literal and “come together” uses.  Because this is the Lumberjanes, the literal band is made of mer-people, and coming together is one of the best traits of these hard core lady types. This collection of comics opens with a flash back to the first day of summer camp as we see each girl being dropped off.  These scenes give us a brief peak into their […]

Friendship to the Max?

August 26, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

In volume four, Out of Time, the Lumberjanes once again are faced with supernatural forces but the real challenge comes from within.  Jealousy and refusal to stand up for a friend can be devastating to friendships.  In this collection of comics, Lumberjanes young and old grapple with the motto “Friendship to the Max”. What starts as an innocent camping trip with their long suffering councilor Jen, turns into a rescue mission when a blizzard mysteriously blankets the area.  Separated from her girls, Jen is injured and […]

Nope, not for me.

August 22, 2017 by narfna 2 Comments

I wanted to like this, so so much. But I had so many problems with it, and ultimately didn’t enjoy myself while reading. Like a lot of people (non-comics nerds mostly), I was introduced to Black Panther and T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War. His appearance in that movie was great (one of the highlights of an already fun movie), and it left me excited for his solo movie. And then of course Ta-Nehisi Coates signs up as a writer for the comics, and that’s […]

Somebody give Glen Weldon a high-five.

June 21, 2017 by narfna 7 Comments

The best thing about The Caped Crusade, Glen Weldon’s book-length ode to Batmania, is Glen Weldon himself. Sure, the actual book is informative and well thought out, organized and insightful. But it’s also got a personality to it, thanks to Weldon, who impregnates even the most mundane sentence with his dry wit and his enthusiasm for his two subjects (Batman, the nature of nerdery). His twin theses? Nerdery isn’t about what you love, but loving what you love with a staggering, vacuum-sucking passion. And that […]

Love these girls. Love this series.

May 6, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

“Do you need to go somewhere and repeatedly fail the Bechdel test?” “Yes I do.” After a little bit of a weird slump with Vol. 3, I am back in love with this series. Susan is fresh off her break-up with McGraw (she sees moustaches everywhere!), and tries to fill the hole with various activities and other men, and nothing is working. Esther has vowed not to come back to school after the Easter holidays after messing everything up all year and in general being […]
