I will not equivocate on my opinion, I have always worn it on my sleeve

July 25, 2016 by baxlala Leave a Comment

The first Julia Wertz graphic novel that I read was Drinking at the Movies and, as I read it, I realized I’d found a kindred spirit. Wertz is a sarcastic curmudgeon who drinks too much and makes the same mistakes over and over and yet still remains realistically optimistic about her life. So. She’s a person, I guess. She also has a fucking filthy mouth and is hilarious and reminds me of my friends. So reading her books is like hanging out with a friend. […]

Not what I was expecting.

Okay, help, you guys. This hasn’t been reviewed for CBR yet, and I need someone to explain it to me. I literally do not understand what is happening with this comic. I WANT to like it, and parts of it are downright amazing (the art, in particular, has this great retro 80s vibe, and the characters are typical BKV amazingness) but THE PLOT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. People were losing their minds over this, so I couldn’t believe when it I closed the first […]

And so I disliked a book written by Gene Luen Yang.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 7 Comments

I’ve read all of Gene Luen Yang’s comics, so it was a no-brainer that I would be reading his version of Superman. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it. Actually, I’ve never really enjoyed a Superman comic, so this may be on me. But before we get to the actual comic, a complaint. WTF, why is the DC comics universe so messed up??? I mean, it took me an hour after reading this to determine which version of Superman I was reading, where it was in the […]

I didn’t quite love this second volume of Giant Days as much as I did the first one, but this is still an unbelievably fun series and I can’t wait for Vol. 3. Vol. 2 covers issues #5-9 of the series, from a winter ball through exams, dating crises, and what happens when you watch too many episodes of Friday Night Lights in a row. Crotchety Susan is for once the only one having reliable sexytimes, while Daisy is going through a questioning phase, and […]

You guys will love this.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Okay, so at first I was reading this and it was enjoyable, but I’m thinking, “I don’t get the fuss.” And then I read like, three more pages, and I was in love. Whoops. Giant Days follows three college freshmen, Susan, Esther and Daisy. As the comic starts, they’ve been in school only about three weeks and have made fast friends with one another. Susan is our narrator. She’s smart and feministy and has a temper. Esther is very pale, pretty and “practically consumptive.” Daisy […]

The Seinfeld of Hipster Heroes

June 11, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Nothing substantial happens in volume two of the Batgirl reboot, and I didn’t mind at all. Barbara Gordon and her gang of friends are fun to hang out with, regardless of whether this particular collection has a overarching story thread or meaningful character development. As an economical comics fan, I generally prefer to buy books of short runs and defined arcs. But, Batgirl’s characters and art are too fun to ignore. This collection carries along the best aspects of volume one (https://cannonballread.com/2015/10/when-superheroes-use-tinder-for-good/) while toning down […]
