Fast and Furious and Undead

June 6, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A lot of casual comic fans probably think of Nic Cage when they think of Ghost Rider. He made a couple of Rider movies before the MCU was the pop culture giant it is now. This All-New Ghost Rider ain’t that. Instead, this trade centers around high school-aged Robbie Reyes, a kid from East LA who is just trying to make some money to take care of his family. Robbie is a gearhead who makes his money by working as a mechanic at a local […]

“Welcome to the trip, man…”

One of the most contradictory elements of my reading life is my love for comics and my inability to calmly and peacefully wait for the next issue of said comics. Their episodic nature is frustrating to my inherent need to binge-read an entire story-line. For example, I subscribe to a favorite author’s entire series (Gail Simone’s recent run on Batgirl, for example), then let them pile up till I have the complete story, and read them all at once. I don’t have a problem (usually, […]

She should go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

So, remember all that stuff I said in my review for Volume 1? About how awesome it was that you didn’t really have to know anything about the character going in, and that the story was totally self-contained?  Forget all that.  This volume was basically the opposite of that.   The story starts with a brief flashback – a generic “years ago” in San Francisco – where our fearless Black Widow meets with Daredevil for a quick chat about right and wrong.  Why is Daredevil […]

An objectively great comic that I didn’t enjoy and don’t want to read anymore

If you know anything at all about comics, then you know Brian K Vaughan. You know him for good reason. He wrote Y: the Last Man, Ex Machina (the comic, not the movie), and also worked on tv’s LOST. Y is one of my favorite examples of a uniquely comic book-based story, as well as an example that comics can deal with adult themes while also being entertaining. Ex Machina is interesting for its political elements and themes (if not its art. LOST is one […]

You’ve got red on you

Fresh off the high of watching Captain America: Civil War, and praying for Scarlett Johansson to get a solo Black Widow movie (seriously, she kicks so much ass), I decided to check out one of the lady’s solo titles.  I have previously avoided most Avengers-related comics as I find them really difficult to jump into, with so many crossovers and characters that I end up spending more time Googling than I do reading.  However, this story was completely stand-alone, requiring no previous knowledge of the […]

3.5 stars I can tell this is going to be a very fun comic series to follow, bringing the list of comic series I follow up to 2 (Saga is the other.) The first volume of Bitch Planet is very introductory, as we meet our main Bitches, learn a little of some of their backstories, and get a broad overview of what’s going on at Bitch Planet (a derogatory term for the off-Earth prison, where the actual name is some euphemistic acronym to do with […]
