A pretty disappointing anthology, to be honest.

Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror by ed. Jordan Peele & John Joseph Adams

May 21, 2024 by narfna Leave a Comment

While there were a handful of really good stories in here, overall I was disappointed with this collection. Way too many confusing or unsatisfying endings. (This was edited by Jordan Peele, but also by John Joseph Adams, whose anthologies in the past I have not really liked, either, and I wish I would have known he was involved before I read it. Would have had more accurate expectations.) “Reckless Eyeballing,” N.K. Jemisin — Okayyyy, but what does it meaaaan. 4/5 stars “Eye & Tooth,” Rebecca Roanhorse — The […]

Can I be a drag queen when I grow up?

The Art of Drag by Jack Hall, Sofie BIrkin, Helen Li and Jasjyot Singh Hans

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably seen something about the world of Drag.  Maybe it was RuPauls Drag Race (or one of the spinoffs), maybe it was Drag Queens reading to kids, maybe it was at a local drag show. But did you ever stop and think about the history of that?  When I told a friend I was reading The Art of Drag by Jack Hall, Sofie BIrkin, Helen Li, and  Jasjyot Singh Hans they thought it was up […]

The Color of Always by Brent Fisher and Michele Abounader

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you like graphic novels or short stories by queer authors and artists?  Then you need to read The Color of Always if you like one or the other or both.  All the stories deal with the queer experience. Some are about coming out, some about finding love, some about losing love. There are stories about families and friends.  There is even one about an assault, so not everything is rosy and happy. There are pluses and minuses in this community and the editors took […]

Read comics or go to hell (um…I might have done both?)

Good Boy V01: Good Boy Magazine #1 by Michael Sweater and Benji Nate

March 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport Own This is the first Benji Nate book they had a part in that I did not enjoy. The concept of Good Boy V01: Good Boy Magazine #1 a Zine format. There are different styles and types of work (done by different authors and/or illustrators) that are included. There is everything from the woman who was once a “Playboy Bunny” like woman to the chapter that had no humanly possible way to read to the one I almost liked until the main character did something […]

“News always reached Miss Marple, one way or another.”

Marple: Twelve New Stories by Various

December 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I would read more of these Agatha Christie short story collections featuring notable authors, for sure. Even the ones where Americans tried and failed to capture that British Marple feeling were entertaining in their failure. But most of these stories were pretty successful! One nailed it completely. Highlights for me were the stories from Ruth Ware (I know!), Naomi Alderman, Elly Griffiths, Kate Mosse, and Leigh Bardugo. This may be the easy way out, but I’ve just copied and pasted my Goodreads status update mini-reviews […]

I promise there is pudding under the whipped cream (I needed a snack break)

Trickster: Native American Tales, A Graphic Collection by Matt Dembicki,

November 21, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I would like to compare the newer edition (2021) of Trickster: Native American Tales, A Graphic Collection to the one I read (2010) as some of the text used does not reflect modern expressions or what is considered politically correct. However, the afterwards of the editor Matt Dembicki, shows the process of working with the authors, storytellers and artists and the care taken to represent the people. This is a good book to teach how cultures express themselves (language flow fits cultural influences), plus how […]
