British murder mystery with a literary twist

The Stranger Diaries by Elly Griffiths

March 17, 2023 by Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Continuing my run of Elly Griffiths novels, this is the first in the Harbinder Kaur series.  Harbinder is a detective near Brighton, UK who is brought in to investigate when a schoolteacher is murdered at Harbinder’s former school.  The other main protagonist, Clare, is a fellow teacher and friend of the murdered woman.  More violence occurs, which seems to center around Clare and a Victorian short story known as The Stranger by the fictional R.M.Holland. What sets this book apart was the way it integrated […]

Good modern whodunnit

Bleeding Heart Yard by Elly Griffiths

March 7, 2023 by Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Continued my read of all the works of Elly Griffiths with Bleeding Heart Yard.  This book is set in London with three focal characters, DI Harbinder Kaur, DS Cassie Fitzherbert and Anna Vance.  Harbinder is investigating the murder of an MP which occurred at a school reunion; both Cassie and Anna were friends and classmates of the murder victim.  It quickly becomes apparent that there may be a connection to the death of another classmate just when GCSE exams had ended. Griffiths excels at writing […]

Fun but not stellar who-dunnit

The Midnight Hour by Elly Griffiths

February 11, 2023 by Elizabeth Leave a Comment

The Midnight Hour is book 6 in a series by Elly Griffiths, but the first that I have read.  I read it since I adore her Ruth Galloway series but have finished it.  Even though I started in the middle of this series, I don’t think it matters that much, it worked fine as a stand alone.  The Midnight Hour is set in 1960s Brighton, UK, where a theatrical producer has died and his retired-actress wife is implicated in his death.  The story primarily follows […]

Maybe Too Soon

The Locked Room by Elly Griffiths

January 23, 2023 by Elizabeth Leave a Comment

Continuing my read of Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway series with The Locked Room, the most recent book, published in 2022.  It starts early in 2020 (we all know what’s about to happen) with life continuing as normal along the marshes of Norfolk, and Ruth making a trip to London to clear out some of her deceased mother’s belongings.  Among them, she finds a picture of her house taken several years before she was born and with the cryptic notation ‘Dawn, 1963’ on the back in […]

Series for Fans of Time Team – don’t tell the author

The Lantern Men by Elly Griffiths

The Night Hawks by Elly Griffiths

January 3, 2023 by Elizabeth 2 Comments

A number of years ago, an elderly cousin sent me the first book in the Ruth Galloway series, noting that it was about England and archaeology and beautifully written.  It languished on my shelf until this fall when I picked it up and am now on books 12 and 13 in the series.   The series revolve around Dr. Ruth Galloway (use her title please, she’s earned it), a forensic archaeologist specializing in bones and the bronze age, who on occasion is called in to help […]

“News always reached Miss Marple, one way or another.”

Marple: Twelve New Stories by Various

December 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I would read more of these Agatha Christie short story collections featuring notable authors, for sure. Even the ones where Americans tried and failed to capture that British Marple feeling were entertaining in their failure. But most of these stories were pretty successful! One nailed it completely. Highlights for me were the stories from Ruth Ware (I know!), Naomi Alderman, Elly Griffiths, Kate Mosse, and Leigh Bardugo. This may be the easy way out, but I’ve just copied and pasted my Goodreads status update mini-reviews […]
