An account of life

I Won't Pretend These Missiles Are Stars: Life in Iran During the 12-Day War by Tehran's Cartoonist Collective / The Cartoonist Collective

March 2, 2026 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The short stories inside of I Won’t Pretend These Missiles Are Stars by Tehran’s Cartoonist Collective deal with the weeks of war between Israel and Iran. Set in Iran, each of the people giving their story has a different way of dealing or not dealing with the events around them. Some worry about the big picture (death), others worry that they never got to wear the special outfit to their presentation. Each author has a unique way of showing what was and wasn’t important to […]

The story in grandmother’s attic

A Family Secret by Eric Heuvel and Lorraine T. Miller

February 26, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Due to the familiarity of the story presented in A Family Secret by Eric Heuvel and Lorraine T. Miller (Translator), things were not as impactful as it could have been. However, if this is your first or near first time reading a WWII / Holocaust story, it is good. The images are busy, so take your time with them. The ending is a smidgen idealistic, but it’s also a nice touch. I am now curious about the sequel / companion graphic novel. I would have […]

Crushing faith

Someday Perfect: (A Graphic Novel) by Kat Schneider

February 19, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Someday Perfect: (A Graphic Novel)  by Kat Schneider  Simple presentation, but it has deep questions. Lovely illustrations. Not for everyone (due to the religious aspects) but most can find something to enjoy. I would say at least 12 and up, but younger children could handle it if they are strong readers. There is some talk of sexual activities, the use of the word sl-t and the body shaming that comes with a patriarchal philosophy. But overall, it was tastefully done. It wasn’t a ‘WOW’ for […]

Pride and Prejudice and Poetry

Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin

February 18, 2026 by lafocareta Leave a Comment

There’s nothing I love better than a good Pride and Prejudice remake. That’s probably how this book ended up on my TBR. Thankfully, I was finally able to make time to get around to it. Then I caught a ridiculous not-COVID-but-miserable ick and lolled around drinking tea and catching up on Bridgerton for a while. Fortunately, that’s actually pretty good preparation to review a P&P remake. “Indian Muslim Marriage Rituals -South Asian Islamic wedding – 6688416795” by wedstories.studio is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 . Set in […]

So Erman and Beck… Can we talk?

Loving, Ohio by Matthew Erman and Sam Beck

February 11, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Did I like Loving, Ohio by Matthew Erman and Sam Beck (illustrator)? I really do not know. I was talking to a librarian at the local library and they asked me if I liked it. They had a copy and read it a while ago and since we have some similar tastes in books they were interested in my opinion. They said they liked it, I said I was not sure. It had a lot of emotions and we talked about pieces of it, the […]

The Tightrope Wanderer by Federica Ortolan and Marco Leoni

February 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ironically, not feeling well while reading an online reader copy might have helped me love the story even more than I would have if I was in perfect health. You see, The Tightrope Wanderer by Federica Ortolan and illustrator Marco Leoni would have probably been just another story about a person who did what he loved, grew old and then moved on. And it would have been nice, but nothing special. Instead, I came away with an appreciation for it that I am not really […]
