Marple: Twelve New Stories by Various

December 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I would read more of these Agatha Christie short story collections featuring notable authors, for sure. Even the ones where Americans tried and failed to capture that British Marple feeling were entertaining in their failure. But most of these stories were pretty successful! One nailed it completely. Highlights for me were the stories from Ruth Ware (I know!), Naomi Alderman, Elly Griffiths, Kate Mosse, and Leigh Bardugo. This may be the easy way out, but I’ve just copied and pasted my Goodreads status update mini-reviews […]

If you hit me with your cane again, you’re gone

a good myth is hard to kill by MajorGodComplex

Kaz is a smart man, but not smart enough to reconsider snarking the most powerful man in the world when dragged out of Ketterdam and across the fold to work for him. Kaz isn’t worried. He’s got plot armor. The Darkling showed his hand much too early with all of that ‘together we’ll change the world’ bullshit.  Still, when the shadows begin to close in on him he can’t help but consider the possibility he may have miscalculated. ……………. Thanks to his black kefta, that’s […]

Dealing with Our Demons by ravenyenn19

Kaz removed the paper to reveal a hat just like the previous one she had ordered for him nearly a year ago, but of even better craftsmanship. He picked it up and turned it over. The inside was lined in black suli silk identical to what Inej had worn tonight, but just inside along the seam, stitched in red silk thread, was a ‘K’ next to a heart. The font was the exact replica of a playing card. The ‘K’ did not stand for ‘Kaz’. […]

That beautiful moment when you wake up feeling safe for the first time in years

the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you by greatunironic

December 11, 2022 by Abi Leave a Comment

I wasn’t going to write any more Stranger Things fic reviews this year. I’m behind on my reviews but I have read enough novels to get me to my half cannonball in six months target. But then I read this fic last night and this morning and did a filthy amount of crying, so with apologies to such read books as When Katie met Cassidy (which was, to microreview, like, fine and ok and other such synonyms) here we are. Set in 2002, many years after the […]

“He kissed for his enjoyment and mine, and we staggered and stumbled our way to the ground, still kissing for the sheer glory of being alive, the wonder of finding a congenial soul in the world, and the very real prospect of being dead before the weekend.”

The Henchmen of Zenda by K.J. Charles

November 21, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This honestly might be five stars on re-read, but I’ve been handing out five star ratings like they’re candy, and I’ve come off my book high now. This is a strong 4.5 stars for now. Firstly, this is a retelling of The Prisoner of Zenda, a Ruritanian Romance/Adventure/Swashbuckler from the late 1800s, written by Anthony Hope. I’ve never read the original, but before diving into this I did read the detailed summary of the book and I’m really glad I did that, because it was […]

Let us Dwell in Fair Ithilien and There Make a Garden by materialism, sparklyslug

November 10, 2022 by Abi 1 Comment

There is something about the way that I appreciate fiction these days in that it’s the stuff that I see parts of myself in that hit the hardest. A lot of my reviews here are self-reflective to a lesser or greater extent. It’s probably a knock on effect of not knowing who I really was or not seeing myself in things for most of the first three decades of my life. With Stranger Things, or more specifically the fic written by the Stranger Things fandom, […]
