Talking cats are fun but give the dragon somethign to do as well

Warriorborn: A Cinder Spires Novella by Jim Butcher

May 30, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Warriorborn is indeed “A Cinder Spires Novella” (that’s actually the subtitle, hence the quotes). It probably wouldn’t work if you haven’t read both of the novels, or at least the first one, but really probably both. It feels kind of like a bit of backstory that gets cut from the main novel for length; it’s how Benedict ends up coming back to Spire Albion early in book 2 from a secret mission with a bunch of kittens (or at least small cats). The plot is […]

“I thought I was allowed to moon after a boy, as the others did, and to have fantasies of posies dropped on my doorstep and pebbles thrown at my window at night. That was when I was younger, before I realized I was not really a woman but something more like a mule or a laying hen—for use but not for adoration.”

A Harvest of Hearts by Andrea Eames

The sorceresses coming to take little bits of peoples’ hearts is a standard in the kingdom. Crops flourish, birthing mothers, animal or human, never die, and achingly beautiful women in impossible carriages show up and pull tiny bits of your heart out of your chest. That’s how the magic is powered in the kingdom, and that’s how it has been for as long as Foss Butcher has been alive, and that is how it seems it will always be. One other constant is that Foss […]

Out of this world pizza and more

Pizza Witch by Sarah Graley and Stef Purenins

March 14, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Inclusion, CBR17 Pie Chart Challenge I find books mostly as reader copies and finished copies. Now, I try to have the reader copies physically in hand (it’s easier for me to read) but sometimes (and a lot more lately) I must settle for an online reader copy. And Pizza Witch by Sarah Graley and Stef Purenins came to me in an email that sent me to the graphic novels link to read. Due in mid September 2025, you’ll have a bit to wait before you […]

Why So Unserious?

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

June 4, 2024 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

I read Starter Villain after my hold came up in the library. That’s always fun, it’s like winning a small lottery, especially if the book has many holds. I liked this; I try not to read other people’s reviews of the same books I read before writing the review, but I did read one for this where the reviewer didn’t like the end and felt like it made the entire thing feel unreal. Which I can understand, but I did not feel that way. There […]

Sithrah V01 Kingdom of the Air by Jason Brubaker

reMIND: Volume 1 by Jason Brubaker

January 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I debated on reviewing Sithrah V01 Kingdom of the Air by Jason Brubaker. I found this fascinating series recently on WebToons. It is completed; therefore, this is one of the reasons I decided to tell you about Sithrah as you can find it there. But I found that the publisher should have copies, too, so find your local independent bookstore and make an order! At first, this story is simple and almost “girly” in format. I was not sure I wanted to finish it. Who […]

Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth by Judd Winick

Hilo V02 Saving the Whole Wide World by Judd Winick

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you ever look at a book and think, “Well that’s not going to be for me?” Then one day, you find it on the library shelves (or in my case the website and I could put in a request for curbside pickup) and you didn’t want to waste your five-limit book allotment, so you pick it up? And did you then ask yourself, “Why did I wait so long to read this?” Okay, I might have been in the right humorous mood, but I […]
