Supernatural friendship

Frank the Monster by Mats Strandberg and Sofia Falkenhem

Maud and the Very Eventful Week (The Adventures of Maud the Vampire) by Lisa Anchin

September 11, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Short books are the reader’s friend. You get to read and not take a long time doing it. You accomplish something. And honestly, sometimes those “little wins” mean a whole lot. That’s one reason why I like children’s books. Not only are they fun, neat and good stories, they can be ways to entertain yourself when you don’t have a lot of time to spend on something longer. Recently, I needed some quick reads to clear the mind of the serious books I was reading […]

Maybe a bit too on the nose for a post today as what her first book is about

Run Home: A Graphic Memoir by Alyssa Bermudez

September 11, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Run Home: A Graphic Memoir by Alyssa Bermudez for me is a nice, and even with a somber plot point, cozy read. Granted, while I felt that it was not as strong as their first book, Big Apple Diaries, it is a delightful read about coming of age, dealing with changes and loss. It is a good coming of age story that is not overwhelming or too mature. It is a memoir of Bermudez’s feelings, thoughts and events. It is a personal read that is […]

I’m looking forward to the third book, Fertile: A Graphic Memoir from Street Noise Books.

Bad Kid (A Graphic Memoir): My Life as a "Troubled Teen" by Sofia Szamosi

September 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

EDIT: When I wrote this review it was right after Marjane Satrapi had passed. So this has sat for a bit.   Due to the death of the author Marjane Satrapi, any story that remotely reminds me of their work gets a little extra love (I admit, I’m being sentimental and have no logic there). Therefore since Bad Kid (A Graphic Memoir): My Life as a “Troubled Teen” reminds me of Satrapi’s work, I gave it a little extra lovin’.  Also, it is the the […]

Watch out for Grandma Billy and the crazy Gods (I’m more scare of GB though!)

Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher

September 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

No matter how many times you tell me, I cannot believe that T. Kingfisher is Ursula Vernon (and Vernon is Kingfisher). They must be two different people! After all Vernon has one voice and Kingfisher has another. Okay, maybe four people actually, as Vernon has three main tones that I have found. The first is fun, quirky, and young. The second has a middle ground voice but can be edgy. And the third is mature and not to Kingfisher’s level, but is not Vernon’s middle […]

The two Sophies

Tree. Table. Book. by Lois Lowry

September 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lois Lowry, in my reading experience, tends to be “presentation soft, but still deals with the hard stuff. And Tree. Table. Book. does not disappoint.   Lowery deals with family, friendship, bullies, mental and physical health and coming to terms with death. Things build slowly but once the stories that relate to the title come into play (I won’t mention them as I feel it is important to learn about them when our narrator does), things really take off. But up until then, things are slow, […]

When they say Good Boy, do they mean the dog or the kid?

Good Boy: A Graphic Novel by Andy Hirsch

September 10, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Good Boy: A Graphic Novel by Andy Hirsch started out rough for me, but ages (strong) six to 10 will get a kick out of a Dog and His Boy! The story is short, sweet and not a lot of traditional action, but has a few points where things happen. The child of this story is off on his school field trip. But he becomes ill (warning: Vomit) and must stay home. This is not the first time his nerves have gotten this bad. Therefore, […]
