Can I help you guys finish up a little bit of your last minute book shopping, if you’re still doing some? Here’s a rundown of the books I wrapped for my niblings today, in case you’re looking for some books for the young people in your life. For my 8-yr-old, fact obsessed, recently graduated to chapter books nephew, we’ve got Highest Mountain, Smallest Star, by Kate Baker, ill by Page Tsou. With its historical scientific illustrations vibe & it’s plethora of facts, I admit it […]

Andy Hirsch how do you know so much about so many different subjects?

Trees: Kings of the Forest by Andy Hirsch

September 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First Second publisher is my kryptonite. It does not matter if I have just read one of their Science Comics, I must read another. And this time, it was the fault of my library that I picked up Trees: Kings of the Forest in this series. You see, I was looking for another book and they did not have it, and since you can check out five books at a time, I figured better find another one. And with its big, cheesy grin, Acorn told […]

I now know why a dog acts like you insulted his ancestors when you fart.

Science Comics: Dogs: From Predator to Protector by Andy Hirsch

September 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If I have one complaint about Science Comics: Dogs: From Predator to Protector by Andy Hirsch is that there was more about the science of the animal and less of the why behind the actions. Yet, like the books on cats, bats and plagues (and more) if you are a fan of the subject, or like learning, you should read this book. If you are a dog fan particularly, this is a fun and fairly easy way to learn about them. There is a small […]

Teeth, Claws and Awww: CATS

Science Comics: Cats: Nature and Nurture. by Andy Hirsch

February 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have tried to find a many First Second Graphic novels. While looking for the Science Comics for Dogs, I found Science Comics: Cats: Nature and Nurture. As far as I was concerned cooler than dogs, but a friend had recommended it. What was I to do? Get the Cat book until the dog book was available! (Really, did you have to wonder?) And Andy Hirsch started off this fun and factual graphic novel on the slow side. I was afraid that I was going […]
